Joint Special Operations University, established in 2000 as an institution of higher learning with a focus on joint special operation operations education, invites applicants as federally funded positions as Title 10 (Administratively Determined) U.S. Air Force employees at the U.S. Special Operations Command, MacDill AFB, Tampa, FL  33621.  All positions would require a Top Secret clearance if the applicant is hired. The positions are assigned to the Institute for Special Operations Forces Strategic Studies with subject matter level-expertise responsibilities for the entire University.  Initial applicants are not to exceed three years with one year of probation.  Positions may be extended in subsequent three to five year terms.  Applicants with a doctoral level or terminal degree from an institution accredited by the U.S. Department of Education are positive factors for consideration.  U.S. Citizenship is required.  Positions are full-time.  Locality Pay is calculated at the ‘All of U.S.’ rate, and within the Tampa, FL and MacDill AFB area according to the “U.S. Air Force Administratively Determined (AD) Pay Plan (Rest of U.S.).” 

The Associate Professor of Science & Technology and Innovative Future should hold a Ph.D. (or terminal degree) in a field related to any science, technology, engineering, mathematics, information technology, public policy, or closely related field from an institution accredited by the U.S. Department of Education at the time appointment begins. Must have seven years or more experience designing courses and teaching at an institution of higher education, with experience teaching adult learners. Must be able to translate or re-frame academic, field-specific research into curriculum for a military or senior executive audience. Appointee will serve as a subject-matter expert on emergent, disruptive, and advanced technology as related to U.S. national and global security, defense strategy and policy, and the future character of conflict. The applicant is expected to work independently and collaboratively as part of or as leader of a cross functional team to develop recommendations to achieve key national security objectives specifically oriented toward technology issues that impact U.S. defense priorities, especially those of the U.S. Special Operations Forces and their enablers across multiple defense and other agencies. Additionally, this position requires the applicant to provide analyses of the relationships between advanced technology and emerging geostrategic threats and opportunities, national security strategy, and defense policy, and/or military operations. Experience working with U.S. SOF/Global SOF is a positive factor. Publication record should be commensurate with experience and reflect expertise in S&T policy, and preferably address the potential impacts of emergent technology in defense. Incumbent is required to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance.

Duties

  • Teaching and Learning (T and L). Participates and supports education and leader development activities as an individua with vision and leadership qualities, who can build strong working relationships with students, faculty, and internal staff as well as supporting staff at the Combatant Command level.
  • Research and Analysis (R&A). Performs research and analysis in order to publish or inform publications that contribute to the JSOU Press, journal articles, policy-oriented essays, operational publications focused on education, blog postings, special reports, books, or book chapters.
  • Service and Outreach (S&O). Conducts both internal and external service to JSOU on a variety of special operations and leader development issue areas for both special operations operators and their enablers.
  • Incumbent is responsible to ensure the core classified national information protection security disciplines of information are fully covered from a policy and programmic view point to ensure overall information protection requirements meet mission requirements.
