Job Description:

The Summer Academic Support Coach, in a culturally competent manner, helps students develop skills, behaviors and habits that contribute to student success in college. This includes supporting students in strengthening skills in areas such as time management, note-taking skills, test taking strategies, online learning tips, canvas & Microsoft applications, critical thinking, problem solving, self-regulation and self-efficacy. The Coach is responsible for promoting a positive and successful learning experience for students taking MCLA Summer Courses. Applying a holistic approach, the Coach will provide general guidelines on refining/making improvements in the student's academic habits utilizing non-content based strategies.

Position Responsibilities

1. Foster persistence and completion by maintaining a caseload of students taking MCLA Summer Courses.
2. Conduct success coaching sessions and routine check-ins via phone, web meeting and in-person with students. This includes students with documented disabilities, including conducting initial intake and assessment of learning. Administer and interpret the Learning and Study Skills Assessment (LASSI).
3. Monitor progress of students in caseload with routine check-ins, scheduled meetings or proactive outreach and communication related to academic and other concerns, and responding to students' questions, concerns and needs.
4. Help students design and implement an enhanced academic success plan that includes goals and objectives that address need area(s). Applying principals of appreciative advising, build rapport and trust with students to support successful goal completion and monitor student progress toward goals.
5. Assist students in developing self-efficacy by identifying and overcoming obstacles impeding academic success. Work with students to learn strong time management and organization skills. Motivate students to practice self-regulation and take ownership of their academic success.
6. Address learning strategies, study skills, executive function systems, and other identified problem areas. Monitor student progress and provide targeted interventions consistent with the learner's individual accommodation plan.
7. Routinely consult Director of Disability Resources regarding instructional methods and/or materials necessary (including Assistive Technology) to meet the specific needs of individual students registered with the Disability Office.
8. Recommend for consideration adjustments to the student's plan for accommodation as appropriate.
9. Have, and or acquire, knowledge of all current resources available to MCLA students to enhance their educational experience, persistence, and general well-being.
10. Submit routine reports of student contacts and interactions, issues arising, and facilitated outcomes of coaching sessions. Timely submit all required reports and documentation of student interactions.
11. Assist with outreach and follow-up with students who received academic concerns or early warnings from faculty.
12. Knowledge of current technologies and word processing, database, presentation, and spreadsheet software, specifically Microsoft Office applications.
13. Proficient computer skills to assist students with the MCLA's learning management system (CANVAS), academic planning tools (DegreeWorks), Drop Out Detective, and student record system (Banner). Maintain updated student data, including documentation of all student interactions, in student record system (Argos).
14. Perform all other duties as assigned.


Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
  • 1 year (2 semesters) of student leadership experience at the undergraduate level
  • Evidence of using honed student success techniques
  • Previous experience in successfully working with diverse populations
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with the MCLA campus, resources, and curriculum
  • Recent MCLA alum

Additional Information:

This is a part-time (15-20 hours per week) temporary position. The rate of pay is $20/hour.
