The Department of Social Sciences in School of Arts and Social Sciences is now inviting suitable candidate(s) to join us for the following post(s). The Department of Social Sciences is committed to foster theoretical and practical knowledge, global awareness and critical thinking of students. It offers a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, covering the fields of psychology, economics, politics and public administration, and applied social studies.


Assistant Professor / Senior Lecturer (Ref: 22000Z2)


Major Duties and Responsibilities

The appointee will be responsible mainly for the following

  • Planning, development, coordination and delivery (including classroom teaching) of courses, and where necessary, programme administration in Applied Social Studies at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
  • Preparing the handbook of ethical and procedural guidelines for service learning / practical training;
  • Liaising with community partners and supervising students in practical training and service learning;
  • Liaising with secondary schools and tertiary education institutions and other relevant stakeholders;
  • Engaging in academic research and publication, and research grant applications;
  • Participating in scholarly activities, School/University activities and administration; and
  • Performing any other duties as assigned.


Candidates should possess the following qualifications, experience and competence:

  • An earned doctorate in sociology, applied social studies, social policy or social work, with expertise in areas of ageing and/or health, or a related discipline;
  • Substantial relevant teaching/professional experience. Preference will be given to candidates who can teach in the following areas:

   1) Health, illness and services in an ageing society

   2) Applied nutrition in ageing

   3) Death and dying

   4) Leisure and ageing

   5) Social innovation and entrepreneurship

  • Outstanding academic background and achievements;
  • Demonstrated academic leadership and contributions in higher education;
  • High level of competence in teaching and postgraduate student supervision;
  • Substantial contribution through effective innovation in delivery of education, curriculum development, course design and teaching/learning methodologies;
  • Solid record of research and peer-reviewed scholarly publications in prestigious outlets;
  • Good accomplishments in obtaining external competitive research grants;
  • Substantial achievements in knowledge transfer; and
  • Considerable contribution to the University, profession and community.


The level of appointment depends on the candidate’s academic background, experience and competence in academic leadership, teaching, research, scholarly publications, etc.


Terms and Conditions for Appointment

An attractive remuneration package, including basic salary, a composite cash/housing allowance, an end-of-contract gratuity, and a discretionary incentive payment, where applicable, will be offered to the right candidates.
