Job Summary

The Director of Marketing and Communications in Drexel University's College of Arts and Sciences is responsible for developing, managing, and implementing proactive, strategic communication plans that advance the brand reputation and strategic priorities of the College and its departments and research centers.

This key leadership role plans, manages and oversees budget for all College marketing and communications activities across all media and platforms to the College's diverse audiences, including prospective students, parents, alumni, donors, media, the Drexel community, peer institutions, guidance counselors and more. She/he will be responsible for managing a team of professional staff, as well as freelance designers, illustrators, writers, and photographers.

The Director of Marketing and Communication reports directly to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. She/he will collaborate with the College's extensive network of students, staff, faculty and alumni, as well as key contacts across the University to inform communication/marketing activities related to recruitment, fundraising, brand awareness, crisis and strategic communications, community-building, event planning and more.

Essential Functions
  • Develop and execute an integrated marketing strategy (i.e., web, social media, print, and other mediums) that effectively communicates the vision, brand, accomplishments and impact of the College's programs, faculty, and students to strengthen the College's brand visibility and reputation among key constituents (e.g., alumni, potential donors, prospective students, parents, guidance counselors, etc) both regionally and nationally
  • Lead the College's marketing, communications and recruitment team and manage the College's communications and marketing budget. Develop all aspects of college branding, communications, and marketing efforts
  • Develop, manage, implement and evaluate strategic communication plans and marketing/advertising campaigns that support College and University branding and strategic priorities. Oversee budgets for all related activities
  • Serve as editor and creative director of the College's annual magazine, Ask. Manage content, design, photography, writing, production and distribution to audience of 5,000+, including College alumni and donors, faculty and staff, University leadership, peer institutions, high school guidance counselors
  • Develop and evaluate recruitment communications plan, in collaboration with College's Director of Undergraduate and Graduate Recruitment and the Office of Enrollment Management and Student Success, to increase enrollment in undergraduate and graduate programs across the College
  • Manage the production and messaging of all College marketing and advertising efforts to support activities related to recruitment, strategic communications, fundraising, special events and more, in a range of print and electronic formats including but not limited to: social media, video, radio, brochures, billboards, emails, newsletters, posters, invitation packages, strategic reports, etc
  • Support the Dean through drafting emails and creating presentations for the University, external funders and other external stakeholders
  • Direct and oversee layout, design and messaging of college and department website(s) in line with College and University branding and web standards and best practices
  • Oversee and conceptualize social media campaigns to build College brand and community
  • Manage crisis and strategic communications. Support dean in the development of his/her communications, including speeches, presentations and print/e­ communications
  • Liaise with University offices including but not limited to the Offices of University Communications, Enrollment Management and Student Success, Institutional Advancement and Alumni Relations to promote stories of the College community, support media relations and recruitment efforts, meet fundraising goals, build alumni community, etc
  • Oversee planning for major college events, such as press conferences, lectures galas, directing invitation design, catering, decor, scheduling, and logistics
  • Work closely and collaboratively with College departments and communications contacts to develop individual departmental marketing plans to ensure consistent College branding and promote faculty and student accomplishments, events and initiatives
  • Manage Drexel CoAS brand across all departments, monitoring that all uses of the Drexel graphic identity system adhere to university guidelines
  • Manage internal staff consisting of associate director of marketing, copywriter, web designer and web developer; as well as large group of external freelancers, including writers, photographers, videographers, and designers. Manage ongoing relationships with marketing agencies, printers, and other vendors to ensure high-quality marketing products and events
  • Other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or related field
  • 7+ years’ experience leading a marketing/communications team
  • Demonstrated understanding of multi-channel marketing strategies, grounded in research and best practice, for both external and internal audiences in a variety of media, web, print, mail, social, event, and more
  • Familiarity with leading focus groups and user testing methods to inform and validate marketing efforts
  • Supervisory experience
  • Superior communication and editing skills. Demonstrated project management and presentation skills
  • Ability to conceptualize creative marketing design and messaging that has high impact
  • Successful candidates will be familiar with current web standards, as well as web and social media analytics
  • Fluent in Adobe Creative Suite, including producing and editing digital photography and video media for posting or streaming on the web
  • Close attention to detail and ability to effectively manage and prioritize multiple high-profile projects successfully in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to work collaboratively and independently
  • Professional and proactive work ethic
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree preferred
  • Experience higher education, including developing and executing marketing plans with clear, measurable objectives in preferred
