Position Title: Adjunct Faculty, Applied Mathematics and Statistics (AMS) The Opportunity:

The Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics at the Colorado School of Mines invites applications for instructors for introductory level coordinated courses in the department. These courses include MATH 111 Calculus I, MATH 112 Calculus II, MATH 201 Probability and Statistics for Scientists and Engineers, MATH 213 Calculus III Multivariable Calculus, MATH 225 Differential Equations, and MATH 307 Introduction to Scientific Computing (with MATLAB programming). Adjunct faculty are hired per semester, have opportunities to teach up to three or four courses each semester, and will have use of a designated office space (possibly shared). All the listed courses are taught in a coordinated setting which includes use of the common homework and exams, as well as a common course calendar and learning objectives. At a minimum, adjunct faculty participate in group grading for course exams and will perform other grading duties depending on the course. All course materials and student communications are managed using the learning management system Canvas.

Responsibilities:
  • Teach assigned classes as per course syllabus and schedule to meet the required contact hours.
  • Employ relevant teaching strategies and foster a supportive learning environment that encourages student success.
  • Assess student work and progress toward mastery of learning outcomes with timely feedback.
  • Hold weekly office hours.
  • Utilize the class technologies to help with course management, course delivery, and student communication including the LMS Canvas.
  • Develop, assess, and improve course materials, assignments, and delivery (as necessary).
  • Attend a weekly instructor meeting (as necessary).
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in mathematics, statistics, or related field.
  • Proven (or promise thereof) teaching ability with college-level mathematics or statistics courses.
  • Ability to work in a team and teach in a coordinated setting.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • PhD in mathematics, statistics, or related field.
  • Experience with learning management systems (e.g. Canvas), student engagement systems (e.g. Clickers), online homework systems (e.g. MyLab Math), and/or online grading platforms (e.g. Gradescope).
  • Familiarity with best practices in mathematical pedagogies.

Pay Range:

Salary range: $5,760 - $8,800 per section.

AMS takes a combination of the candidate’s education and experience, the number of credits per course, and the number of course preps into consideration when determining the per course salary.
