Statement of Job:

The Special Education Department at the University of Southern Maine seeks part-time faculty to teach its Learners Who Are Exceptional in General Education (SED 540) for our Fall 2022 Session that begins on August 29, 2022.

The primary goal of Learners Who Are Exceptional in General Education (SED 540) is to construct an understanding and knowledge of the range of exceptionalities, including students with disabilities and those identified as gifted and talented. The course is based on the following premises: a) students with disabilities are guaranteed an appropriate education that includes engagement with typically developing peers and is based on the general education curriculum to the greatest extent possible; and b) students who are gifted and talented should be educated appropriately based on their academic and artistic abilities. Topics include characteristics of areas of exceptionality; planning and strategies for differentiating instruction and universal design; assistive technology; state and federal laws regarding students who are exceptional; working with families; Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS); and collaboration among all school personnel.

USM’s Special Education Department offers a variety of programs designed for both individuals seeking to earn certification to teach special education or to enhance their skills to support students with various learning needs. There are three concentrations in the Master of Science in Special Education. The USM Special Education program integrates systemic approaches to meeting student learning needs and all courses include connections to a multi-tiered system of support (MTSS). Students apply learning through projects and assignments that are practical and connected to their professional goals. To learn more about USM’s Special Education Program click here .
