Job Description:
Amherst College invites applications for consideration for either a
Physician's Assistant or a Nurse Practitioner position. The
Physician's Assistant or a Nurse Practitioner is a full-time,
one-year term position, starting at $110,000 - commensurate with
experience. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse
liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will
demonstrate the w ays in which they bring value to and will work
towards supporting a broadly diverse community.
Under the general direction of the Director of Health Services, the
Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant provides evaluation and
treatment for - acute illness or injury, episodic illness, chronic
disease, and health maintenance using guidelines set by the
College's Health Services. Refers to the Director any patients that
require further evaluation and definitive care. Using independent
judgment provides this service for a diverse set of students during
scheduled clinic hours throughout the year and during on-call hours
when needed. After-hours duties may include sporting event
coverage. The Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant takes
appropriate actions to support a diverse workforce and participates
in the College's efforts to create a respectful, inclusive, and
welcoming environment.
Summary of Duties and Responsibilities
Patient Care
- Functions interdependently under the guidance of the Director in the identification, management, and treatment of health or injury problems. Takes a patient's medical history, performs physical examinations and procedures. Orders and/or performs appropriate laboratory and other diagnostic tests, interprets results of tests, and make appropriate clinical judgments.
- Assesses physical and psychosocial health/illness status of patients. Recognizes abnormalities and brings to the attention of the Director those not covered by standard guidelines.
- Regulates medications and diet, provides psychosocial support. Prescribes medications in accordance with NP/PA written guidelines.
- Uses Universal Precautions when exposed to blood and body fluids.
- Coordinates all phases of patient health care, makes arrangements for outside examinations and refers patients to other health care professionals if indicated. Provides health education and teaching to a diverse and inclusive community. Provides care to patients under the influence of alcohol or other drugs, as well as emotionally unstable patients.
Performs other duties functions as requested
- Has developed clinical expertise and provides expert consultation to other health care staff.
- Maintains working knowledge of emergency equipment.
- Participates in scheduled meetings, task forces, and committees. Participates in programs of quality assurance, peer reviews, and continuing education.
Qualifications
Required:
- Graduate of an accredited BS degree nursing education program, plus completion of Master's level program for Nurse Practitioner or completion of a master's degree from an accredited Physician Assistant Program
- Current Registered Nurse/Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant license to practice in Massachusetts.
- Two years Nurse Practitioner/Physician's Assistant experience and must include prescriptive practice in an ambulatory care setting.
- Experience in interpreting diagnostic tests including laboratory and x-ray results.
- Demonstrated ability to work well with a diverse student body in culturally competent ways.
- Strong verbal and written communication, interpersonal, time management, and organizationalskills
- Must successfully complete pre-employment physical and lift test
Preferred:
- Experience in working with adolescent and young adult patients
