Grinnell College’s Center for Careers, Life, and Service (CLS) is seeking a passionate, student-centered professional to join our team as Exploratory Adviser.
The Exploratory Adviser is a first point of contact for first-year students for the Center for Careers, Life, and Service and serves as a welcoming, supportive resource as they transition and acclimate to college. The Exploratory Adviser’s primary focus is providing quality advising to students as they assess their values, strengths and interests; gain skills through high impact experiential learning; and connect and network with others to build professional relationships. Advising activities may include career exploration, résumé and cover letter writing, internship and job searching, interview preparation, and more.

In addition to these advising responsibilities, the Exploratory Adviser will conduct outreach and programming with campus constituents, including first-year experience faculty members, and develop resources to support student’s professional, personal, and civic development.

  The salary starting point for this position is $41,580. Minimum Qualifications Candidates must possess a master’s degree in counseling, student development, higher education, or related field and at least one year of experience in career development, higher education advising, or a similar field, or equivalent.

Candidates must possess an interest in working with a diverse learning community (students, faculty, and staff) and promoting the tenets of equity and inclusion.

Knowledge of career development, career exploration processes, and student development is required for this position.

Familiarity with identifying and applying for experiential learning opportunities, including internships and research opportunities, and knowledge of résumé and cover letter writing standards is preferred.

Exploratory Advisers must possess exceptional communication (verbal and written) skills and can interact and collaborate effectively with all levels of the College community, including students, faculty, alumni, staff, and administrators. This individual should also demonstrate a commitment to professional and ethical standards as they relate to advising and counseling.

A general familiarity with STEM academic fields and career paths (examples include scientific research, technology and data science, engineering, biomedicine, pre-health) is preferred but not required.
