Nine-Month Simulation and Practical Nursing Faculty
Wytheville Community College (WCC) is seeking a candidate for
the Simulation and Practical Nursing nine-month faculty position.
The position will provide Nursing Simulation primarily to the
Practical Nursing program but when needed also to the Associate
Nursing Programs at WCC’s Crossroad Simulation (Sim) Hospital
located at the Crossroads Institute in Galax, VA. In addition to
providing quality simulation for WCC nursing students, the position
will provide instruction to the Practical Nursing program. Teaching
responsibilities may include classroom, clinical, and campus
laboratory instruction. The position may require clinical travel;
some evening and weekend classes and clinicals; active
participation in nursing faculty, curriculum development and
team-teaching meetings; and other activities. The position will be
primarily housed at the Crossroads Institute in Galax, but the
position may require limited responsibilities at any college
locations as needs are requested. The faculty member’s role
encompasses learning facilitation, personal and professional
development, and institutional and community service.
Primary responsibilities for this position are as follows:
Simulation
Collaborate with the simulation Coordinator to develop simulation
curricula to support program and course outcomes in all WCC Health
Profession and Medical Service programs;
Conduct debriefing within scope of knowledge or assist content
expert with debriefing;
Set up and maintenance of computer-based training programs for
simulation for the Crossroads Sim Hospital;
Coordinate and supervise the general operation of the Crossroads
Sim Hospital simulation to provide a wide variety of patient
simulation experiences;
Act as the primary contact for scheduling the Crossroads Sim
Hospital;
Collaborate with the Simulation Coordinator on the regular
maintenance and repair of all simulation equipment,
including:
Human patent simulators (HPS), computers, monitors and a variety of
patient simulation experiences; Audiovisual and debriefing systems;
communicate effectively with manufacturers regarding warranty,
maintenance, repair, update and technology changes; and coordinate
upgrades to software and equipment as needed.
Collaborate with the Simulation Coordinator to provide technical
support for task trainers and multimedia peripherals including, but
not limited to:
Beds/examination tables, headwalls, patient monitors, and other
health equipment;
Medication dispensing systems; and
Vital sign monitors.
Organize and restock simulation laboratory supplies;
Oversee the set up and take down of simulation laboratory
equipment-allowing for turnover of the simulation lab set up as
necessary to accommodate multiple groups;
Provide recommendations for equipment and supply purchase
anticipating future changes in technology;
Ensures safety for all users;
Maintain laboratory to meet regulation and accreditation
standards;
Collaborate with the simulation coordinator to develop simulation
protocols for each course;
Coordinate the Crossroads Sim Hospital training for all users of
the simulation laboratory including faculty;
Provide orientation to new simulation lab staff and oversee their
training;
Schedule simulation laboratory staff to support learning
activities;
Maintain learner confidentiality;
Troubleshoot and revise problematic nursing simulation lab
assignments as requested by instructors; and
Collaborate with instructors to determine what simulation is needed
for weekly instruction.
Teaching
Teach a minimum of 10-13 contact hours per semester. Teaching range
may vary to meet required simulation needs each semester;
Fill-in for instructors (lecture and/or lab) when necessary;
Establish and maintain a student-focused classroom/lab teaching and
learning environment conducive to student success;
Design and implement teaching methods and strategies which
complement lecture with lab instruction;
Acquire skills for teaching online courses and other emerging
teaching innovations and delivery methods; and
Collaborate with Practical Nursing Program Head to develop and use
a syllabus and calendar for each course or laboratory within
program guidelines.
Other Duties
Communicate effectively with
all educators, administrative staff and technical support
staff;
Coordinate tours of the Crossroads Sim Hospital;
Prepare and submit instructional records, reports, grades, and all
other required paperwork in a timely, efficient manner meeting all
deadlines, checking for accuracy, correctness, and completeness of
all data;
Exert an effort to remain current in discipline and instructional
methods through professional development activities offered by the
college and other opportunities including attendance at off-campus
activities, webinars, etc., as feasible;
Must maintain current unrestricted license to practice as a
registered nurse in Virginia;
Participate in program and curriculum review; offering suggestions
concerning the improvement of curriculum in keeping with the
mission and vison of the College;
Serve on the Practical Nursing Advisory Committee;
Participate in discipline, departmental, divisional, and
institutional meetings, including service on college standing
committees, and other announced co-curricular activities of the
college;
Maintain proper communication and supportive relationships at all
times with all other units and branches of the college;
Assist in the recruitment and retention efforts of the college;
and
Perform other duties as assigned.
KSA’s/Required Qualifications:
- Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing with current CPR certification;
- Unrestricted license to practice as an RN in Virginia upon hire;
- Commitment to obtain certification as a Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator;
- Possess a valid driver’s license;
- Experience as a registered nurse providing direct care;
- Can demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills;
- Computer literacy in PC-based programming (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite, Zoom, etc.); and
- Must possess excellent interpersonal skills and a strong commitment to providing a quality education for our students.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master of Science in Nursing;
- Teaching experience in nursing;
- Clinical nursing experience in medical surgical, obstetrics, and pediatric nursing;
- Experience working with students in the clinical setting;
- Certified as a Healthcare Simulation Educator and experience in providing nursing simulations (SimCapture Pro Cloud, etc.);
- Demonstrated flexibility in working with others and meeting the needs of a diverse student population; and
- BLS/ACLS instructor.
