Faculty Positions at the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, National Taiwan University

Established in 1928, National Taiwan University is a leading research university in Asia with over 30,000 students. The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures (DFLL) welcomes applications for the following faculty positions.

General requirements (see also specific requirements under each track): Minimum requirements include a PhD in a related field, a strong publication record and university-level teaching experience. NTU is a research institution; faculty are expected to pursue national grants and publish in top-tier journals. All full-time faculty members teach at least one DFLL service course such as writing, conversation, and (if applicable) Freshman English, and are free to design their own syllabi for service courses as well as undergraduate and graduate electives. Faculty may direct theses and serve on various university and department committees. Some knowledge of Chinese and experience in teaching in a Chinese-speaking environment is a plus.

Openings:

Track One—German. One full-time position. The successful candidates should:

• Have a PhD in Teaching German as a Foreign Language or a related field, such as German Linguistics or German Literature.
• Have experience of teaching German as a Foreign Language.

Track Two—French. One full-time position. The successful candidates should:

• Have a PhD in Teaching French as a Foreign Language or a related field, such as French Linguistics or French Literature.
• Have experience of teaching French as a Foreign Language.

Track Three—Chinese-English and English-Chinese Translation/Interpreting. One full-time position. The successful candidate should:

• Have a PhD in Translation, Conference Interpreting, Translation and Interpreting or a related field.
• Have research publications in journals listed in the Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI), Arts & Humanities Citation Index (A&HCI), THCI Core or international peer-reviewed journals.
• Preferably have experience of teaching undergraduate courses related to Translation and Interpreting.
• Preferably have experience of implementing MOST-funded or MOE-funded research projects as the principal investigator.

Track Four—TESOL. One full-time position. The successful candidates should:

• Have a PhD in TESOL or a related field.
• Have research publications in journals listed in the Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) or Arts & Humanities Citation Index (A&HCI) or international peer-reviewed journals.
• Preferably have experience of teaching undergraduate courses related to TESOL.
• Preferably have experience of implementing MOST-funded research projects as the principal investigator.
• Preferably possess the teacher certificate in secondary education issued by the Ministry of Education in Taiwan, or have completed the Teacher Education Program for Secondary Education in Taiwan.
• Offer the courses required by the NTU Center for Teacher Education (including Teaching Methods and Materials in English/Languages, Practicum in English/Languages, and Internship in English/Languages).

Track Five—Comparative Literature specialty. Two full-time positions. The successful candidates should:

• Have native-level proficiency in English.
• Have strong research initiatives for interdisciplinary work between literary studies and other fields. A secondary specialization in any of the following areas is particularly desirable: visual studies, history and philosophy of science and technology, studies in European literatures and cultures, Chinese-language literatures and cultures, critical theory and media studies.
• Teach survey courses conducted in English, such as “Approaches to Literature” and “European/World Literature.”

Track Six—Literary and Cultural Studies. One full-time position. The Department is committed to hiring a talented scholar:

• Whose work holds a great promise of intellectual leadership or whose ongoing work has attracted international audiences and will contribute to greater recognition of the Department's research profile.
• From various subfields in literary studies or cultural studies, which might include, but not be limited to, critical studies of an emerging field such as digital humanities, the Anthropocene, environmental humanities, or any aspects of planetary futures.
• Who demonstrates a dedication to excellent teaching and governance-sharing service commensurate with rank.

Track Seven—Early American Literature. One full-time position. The successful candidates should:

• Have a PhD in English or a related field.
• Preferably specialize in Colonial and Early National American Literature, Indigenous/Native American Studies, Early African American Literature, or/and Transatlantic/Hemispheric Studies.

III. Salary and Ranks:

Salaries are set by the R.O.C. Ministry of Education. The regular teaching load is 7 hours per week for full professors, and 8 for associate and assistant professors; assistant professors are granted a course reduction for the first three years, so the starting course load is 2:2. Other benefits include merit pay, startup funds, family health insurance, research grants and awards (on a competitive basis), teaching and research assistants, and subsidized university housing (subject to availability).
