Virginia Tech, a founding member of the ACRL Diversity Alliance ( www.ala.org/acrl/issues/alliancefaq ), is committed to mentoring and establishing networks for recent graduates, early-career librarians, and early-career data and information professionals. The program’s overarching goal is to help residents gain experience in one of the specializations and assist them in learning about a variety of library services as a professional faculty member in higher education. Virginia Tech and the Diversity Alliance will help build a foundation for successful career development opportunities as well as strongly support inclusion and diversity initiatives.

Features :
  • Flexible, individualized professional development plan
  • Mentoring, both individual and as part of the Residency Program cohort

Strategic Areas

Data management and curation services

Data Management and Curation Services helps faculty and students manage, curate, and publish their research data. We advise researchers on data management best practices; create and improve curation workflows built around the Virginia Tech Data Repository (data.lib.vt.edu); and collaborate with other curators in the Data Curation Network.

Collections and outreach for the physical sciences

This is an excellent opportunity for those interested in developing and managing collections in the sciences and in cultivating the growing interest among scholars and students in open access and open science. The resident will work collaboratively with a team of research librarians, provide instruction and research consultations for designated areas including chemistry and physics, and ensure that students, faculty and staff in the sciences have access to a suite of innovative library services and collections.

Evidence synthesis

Evidence Synthesis Services (ES) support systematic reviews and meta-analyses through consultations, educational opportunities, and research partnerships. The team’s key values are to break down barriers to anyone interested in producing high-quality ES; explore opportunities and emerging trends in ES; and engage with and contribute to the ES community. Emerging trends we are currently exploring include: text and data mining, crowdsourcing, and community-involved or stakeholder-engaged ES.

Metadata services

Metadata Services ensures that metadata created and used by the Library adheres to modern standards, is suitable for description as well as access, and accurately represents the Library’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Our areas of interest include reparative description and practical applications of linked data.

Open education

The Open Education Initiative is committed to building awareness of open educational practices and conducting collaborative work resulting in faculty-authored and student-reviewed course materials that are freely and publicly released under open licenses. We leverage grant funds, technical assistance, and partnerships within the library and university to support faculty awareness, adoption, adaptation, creation, and public-release of open educational resources across a variety of disciplines.

Publishing services

Virginia Tech Publishing (VTP) engages in the latest trends and practices to expand the Libraries’ academic publishing services. VTP publishes in traditional formats as well as other emerging media — especially those that integrate interactive and multimodal media (e.g. podcasts) into teaching, learning, and research. VTP publications are freely available online. VTP also offers specialized publishing services for the Virginia Tech community and strives to make its publications accessible to people with disabilities.
