The University of Montana invites applications for a Community Director for UM Housing. As the Community Director you will live on campus and manage all day-to-day activities related to student staff supervision, living learning programs, and work to develop cohesive, safe, inclusive, and positive communities. You will work within 1-2 Residence Halls or the Apartment Communities. You will work under the guidelines established in the University of Montana Student Conduct Code, University of Montana policies and procedures, and UM Housing policies and procedures. Final apartment or residence hall community placement will be decided depending on the skills and experience of the person hired.

As the Community Director you will supervise 4-15 student staff members; implement the Residential Curriculum; coordinate living/learning activities; and work collaboratively with the summer conference coordinator in the supervision of the summer staff.

Position duties include six main areas, but are not limited to:

  1. Operational and administrative functions of daily residential community management
  2. Residential Curriculum/Community Development
  3. Community Standards including investigating and adjudicating lower level student conduct cases
  4. Conflict/Crisis Management that includes an on-call duty rotation for the UM Housing community 365 days of the year and respond to situations as needed
  5. Supervision of 4-15 paraprofessionals staff within assigned communities
  6. Summer Operations including supervision of 4-25 paraprofessional staff and implementation of conferences within assigned communities

Position Details
  • Position is full-time, 1.0 FTE, Letter of Appointment and includes a comprehensive and competitive benefits package including Insurance package, mandatory retirement plan, partial tuition waiver, and wellness program.
  • Salary for this position is $37,000 per year commensurate with qualifications.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree and two (2) years student housing or similar experience and experience working with or leading students or teams in a college or similar setting.
    • Master’s degree in counseling, educational leadership, student affairs or related field, or previous full-time work in student housing or a similar field, may be substituted for one (1) year of experience or other requirements.
  • Experience working with or leading students or teams in a college or similar setting
  • Experience working with diverse communities and promoting inclusivity through work
  • Ability to resolve conflict through mediation
  • Possess a thorough ability to communicate with a wide variety of diverse people in a precise and professional manner, both orally, electronically and through written word
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of sensitive material in accordance with FERPA and the Clery Act
  • Ability to critically think and resolve problems during emergency and crisis response
  • Ability to maintain an organized workload requiring multi tasking, delegations, as needed, and the need to prioritize various responsibilities with little direct supervision
  • Ability to coordinate work schedules with staff, students, faculty, guests and visitors to ensure that both customer and building needs are met
  • Ability to live on campus in a department provided apartment in or near assigned residential area


Preferred Qualifications
  • A Master’s Degree in Higher Education, College Student Personnel Administration, Public Administration or Counseling and two (2) years progressive experience in residential education management position, including live in residence hall experience and student conduct adjudicatory experience.
  • A strong knowledge of residential education and student personnel administration, student staff training and supervision, and diversity issues common within a residential education organization.
  • Experience with maintaining a budget and ability to follow budget procedures.
