CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

The University of Delaware invites applications for the position of Academic Advisor I in the Center for Health Professions Studies. The Health Professions Academic Advisor I provides comprehensive premedical/pre-health profession advising to alumni and undergraduate students from across all colleges and schools in one-on-one and group settings, and prepares and delivers workshops and programs across campus. Under the limited direction of the Deputy Provost for Academic Affairs, this position works as part of the Center for Health Profession Studies (CHPS) whose mission is to assist students in developing a path forward in their pursuit of advanced training and a career in the health professions including, but not limited to medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, physician assistant training, and physical & occupational therapy. Students are also supported in a premedical post baccalaureate program of study.



MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide information and support to students regarding healthcare careers and program admission requirements, standardized test preparation, admission essays, reviewing and selecting programs, etc.
  • Advise students about all aspects of healthcare careers including pre-requisite courses, standardized admissions tests (MCAT, DAT, OAT, GRE, etc.), co-curricular recommendations, and admission requirements.
  • Serve as an assistant to the Academic Program Coordinator in the management of the University Health Professions Evaluation Committee (HPEC) which is an institutional committee composed of faculty and local physicians, dentists, and other health care professionals.
  • Serve as a liaison with admissions boards of medical and professional schools.
  • Works with Career Development, Study Abroad and academic departments to coordinate shadowing/volunteering experiences, internships, and experiential learning opportunities for students both domestically and abroad.
  • Provide strategic individual and group coaching as well as host programs and workshops around pre-health options, career/major decision-making, and professional development utilizing core competencies expected of incoming medical students.
  • Hold orientation meetings and regular advising hours specifically for pre-health students.
  • Develop and oversee a peer health professions advising program for students at all levels.
  • Set up and monitor internship/shadowing/community service activities and organize site visits.
  • Organize and maintain pre-health advising office (manage resources, interview space and recording technology; organizing test prep information, academic paths, gap year options, etc.).
  • Create and maintain online health profession materials for the purpose of pre-health student advising.
  • Assist with the execution of events, programming, and admissions information sessions (i.e., UD Decision Days, Medical Scholars Meetings, Health Professions Fair, etc.).
  • Serve as an active member of the National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions (NAAHP).
  • Maintain accurate statistical reporting of activities through reporting systems.
  • Work with a team to assess outcome and value of programming and services.
  • Manage a comprehensive student HPEC interview process and evaluation schedule for students pursuing health profession programs of study in medicine.
  • Perform other site- and position-specific functions as assigned.



QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in education, educational administration, counseling, career counseling, student development, or other related field and two years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in health professions/academic advising, including counseling, educational programming, working with faculty and admissions representatives, and administrative responsibilities is preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of all aspects of application preparation and decision-making related to medical school or other health professions admissions processes is preferred.
  • Ability to evaluate student transcripts and/or records.
  • Ability to communicate course prerequisites, certification, and/or curriculum/graduation requirements to students.
  • Advanced working knowledge of advisement policies, procedures, systems, regulations, and standards at the university level.
  • Ability to conduct individual and small group coaching sessions.
  • Knowledge of a broad range of health professions careers and opportunities for students to enhance their professional development and competencies important in healthcare fields.
  • Experience with UDSIS, SLATE, and Blue Hen Success platforms is preferred
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrates an understanding and consideration of the differing needs and concerns of individuals with varying identities, cultures and backgrounds.
