Under the direction of the Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Dean of Students (DOS) is responsible for developing, coordinating, implementing, and assessing programs that advance a positive and inclusive student affairs culture at Goodwin University. Continuously improving student success and retention is of paramount importance to the institution and key to this role. The DOS serves as the primary advocate for students and coordinates, communicates, and shares information with students, faculty, staff, and all constituents who impact student success, retention, and program completion inside and outside the institution. The Dean of Students will be responsible for leading the development, administration, and oversight of programs that help foster student involvement as well as aid students in making meaningful connections during their time at Goodwin University. This position will directly supervise and oversee the following areas: 1) Assistant Dean of Students for Academic Advising, Career Services, and Counseling Services; 2) Assistant Dean of Students for AccessAbility Services, Community and Educational Service Learning, Residential Life and Housing, Student Engagement, and Veteran Affairs, and; 3) Assistant Dean of Students for Case Management Services, Early College Programs, Educational Opportunity Program (E.O.P.) and Student Conduct and Community Standards, and 4) Director of Libraries and Academic Success Center.

Duties in this position are diverse requiring knowledge of university policies and procedures with intensive knowledge in many specialized fields. The DOS must develop and implement policies and practices, ensure compliance with federal regulations and articulate policies clearly to faculty, students and staff. This often involves understanding roles and responsibilities of all student service personnel and the interrelationships between student services, academics, and general university operations. Tasks in this position require attention to detail and empathy. The DOS must work independently and communicate openly and regularly with the Vice President for Academic Affairs and members of the Cabinet.

The DOS must display strong judgment. Decision making by the DOS has a significant impact on the relationship between the university, its students, and ultimately, the performance of the organization. Contacts are primarily within the organization though the DOS may be called upon to represent the university’s student affairs apparatus to outside constituents. The DOS must be able to communicate complex information and provide leadership and direction by recommending creative solutions at all levels of the institution.

Essential Job Functions/Primary Responsibilities :

  • Develop, implement, evaluate, and continuously improve university-wide programs and services related to Student Affairs with a special emphasis on student success and retention. Oversee and lead the following: a) Assistant Deans, b) Dean’s Council, c) Student Retention Taskforce, and d) Student Affairs Team Meetings
  • Oversee the selection, supervision, development, and retention of student affairs staff
  • Develop, coordinate, and execute Student Affairs budget, policies and procedures. Publish and distribute the Student Handbook. Deliver and refine New Student Orientations
  • Work with student groups and relevant offices to enhance and improve their impact and understanding of student development and student life at the university
  • Lead professional development activities: informing staff about professional development opportunities, conferences, and workshops related to student services, developing ongoing educational programs on issues related to student services, and coordinating annual office retreats
  • Work to establish a student affairs culture that encourages diversity and students’ learning to respect and appreciate inclusivity and difference
  • Coordinate with Office of Institutional Effectiveness to administer, analyze and recommend changes based on student opinion and feedback
  • Discretely handle confidential student and organizational information
  • Conduct all work in a safe manner and assure all work safety practices are followed
Other Functions :
  • Performs similar or related work as required, directed, or as situations dictate

  • Assists other department staff as needed to promote a team effort
Knowledge, Ability and Skill :
  • Knowledge of the ways higher education institutions operate, emerging trends in higher education, best practices in Student Affairs, federal regulations and guidelines, best practices in adult education
  • Exceptional leadership, talent management and supervisory skills
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal and collaboration skills with colleagues and partners
  • Strong skills in conflict resolution and student counseling, and restorative justice
Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience:
  • Doctoral degree or ABD in relevant higher education field (e.g. student affairs, higher education administration, etc.), and a minimum of 5 years of successful management experience in higher education, including direction of at least one of the core departments in student affairs
  • Demonstrated commitment to developing and fostering best practices and policies to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion, support the University’s strategic plan, and build an environment in which all members of the University community are treated with respect and dignity. Promote an environment where all have the opportunity to succeed
  • Demonstrated expertise in best practices in student services and affairs, and development needs of non-traditional students
