Instruct ABE/GED classes for adult learners within Johnson County Adult Education (JCAE) to help students achieve academic success, including earning their high school diploma and job readiness skills. Design, develop, and implement new curricula to comply with funding requirements and continuously improve instruction and outcomes. Train and mentor new adult basic education and GED® (ABE/GED®) and English Connection (EC) instructors. Assist ABE/GED® Program Coordinator with teacher observations and coaching. Substitute teach as needed to cover staff absences at all program locations. Work with the JCAE leadership team to drive efficient, effective program operations.



Job Duties
Job duties include but are not limited to:
  • INSTRUCT ADULT BASIC EDUCATION/GED AND ENGLISH CONNECTION CLASSES FOR ADULT LEARNERS - Teach at least one class per semester to adult learners in adult basic education. GED® or English Connection class or integrated career technical training classes. Instruct short-term specialty classes such as digital literacy and GED® subject-specific curricula (Reasoning Through Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, or Social Studies). Periodically substitute for absent instructors.
  • DESIGN, DEVELOP AND IMPLEMENT NEW CURRICULA - Monitor program requirements and best practices and proactively adapt, refine and add curricula to address new program requirements and best practices. For example, a current need is to develop and integrate curriculum for local workforce partners through onsite programs to meet the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) requirements. Educate staff, train teachers, and implement new features, soliciting feedback and incorporating refinements ongoing.
  • TRAIN/MENTOR NEW INSTRUCTORS, OBSERVE CLASSROOM TEACHER PERFORMANCE, AND COACH TEACHERS TO IMPROVE PERFORMANCE
  • SUPPORT EFFICIENT AND EFFECTIVE OPERATIONS - Assist in developing and implementing procedures/policies for JCAE, including design/facilitation of training.
  • SPECIAL PROJECTS - Complete special projects and/or reports upon request.

Required Qualifications
Master's degree in education, curriculum development, or content-specific area
3+ years experience in teaching adult learners
3+ years of experience teaching in a classroom setting
2+ years of experience developing curricula to meet the needs of students and to comply with program standards and federal and state regulations
Understanding the challenges and needs of non-traditional adult learners
Demonstrated leadership and coaching experience
Strong communication skills, including written and oral presentations to large and small groups
Proficient in Microsoft Office
Proficient in using technology to enhance learning within the classroom
Flexible schedule with the ability to work evenings and occasional Saturdays as needed


Preferred Qualifications
ABE/GED® non-traditional instructional experience
Experience with Johnson County Community College processes and resources
