Syracuse University and the Center for Reproductive Evolution (https://cre.syr.edu/) is seeking a motivated and innovative biologist to lead an integrative research program between academics in Biology and Forensics and industry to characterize the molecular basis of gonadal sex reversal in chickens. The position offers a great deal of scientific freedom for a candidate with strong leadership skills and the ability to independently coordinate a dynamic collaborative research effort. Qualifications
Required: demonstrated research productivity at the graduate level or beyond, strong organizational skills, enthusiasm for mentoring graduate/undergraduate researchers, strong writing and quantitative skills.

Preferred: A MS or PhD degree in a relevant field, including developmental biology (or evo-devo), genetics, genomics, reproductive biology and agricultural sciences/animal husbandry. Experience in bioinformatics, computer science and or data analytics. Job Specific Qualifications
Preferred: Research experience in transcriptomics, proteomics, embryology, microdissections, confocal microscopy and/or basic molecular genetics and biochemistry techniques. Responsibilities
  • Experimental design and execution: The successful candidate will be responsible for the design and execution of experiments with minimal oversight. Experiments will consist of both wet lab and in-silico approaches to RNASeq and epigenetics in determining the mechanisms responsible for the reversal of gonadal sex differentiation in genetically male birds.
  • Management/Oversight of Graduate/Undergraduate Research: Responsibilities will include managing student projects that will include tasks such as but not be limited to mentoring, scheduling experiments, training techniques, troubleshooting issues, and reporting results.
  • Research Program Management: Coordination of project activities and paying particular attention to the direction of research and meeting specified milestones. The candidate will be responsible for project delegation and implementation as directed by the Principal Investigators.
  • Dissemination (reports, presentation, manuscript preparation): The candidate will be responsible for independently drafting monthly reports, presentations, manuscripts for publication, and grant writing. Excellent written communications will be essential for the duties in this section.
  • Communications/logistics (liaison between industry and academia): Communications regarding results and progress between the academic group and the industrial sponsor will be the responsibility of the candidate. These responsibilities may include leading discussions of results, troubleshooting issues, recommending further studies, and sharing information with the larger team. Excellent oral communications will be essential for the duties in this section.
