The School of Engineering (SoE) Innovation Management & Design Engineering Group (IMDE) at Brown University invites applications for a Professor of the Practice full-time faculty appointment with an anticipated start date of January 1, 2023 (or sooner if schedules permit). Our focus is on individuals with professional and/or academic experience in our expanding focus areas of technology leadership, innovation management, entrepreneurship, or design engineering. Strong candidates will have expertise across two or more of these areas.

The primary academic areas represented by IMDE are:

  • Master of Science in Innovation Management and Entrepreneurship (PRIME). PRIME has experienced rapid growth in the past three years, becoming the highest enrolling masters in SoE and one of the largest master programs on campus.
  • Master of Science and Technology Leadership (MTL). Run jointly by Brown’s SoE and the School of Professional Studies, MTL has also seen significant enrollment growth.
  • Master of Arts in Design Engineering (MADE). Offered in partnership with the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), with the first class graduating in May 2022.
  • SoE is establishing a new design engineering track for undergraduate students.
  • SoE offers numerous innovation management/entrepreneurship courses to undergraduate students.

IMDE also works closely with the Jonathan M. Nelson Center for Entrepreneurship, which has created a strong entrepreneurial ecosystem across the university since its founding in 2016.

A primary goal in all these initiatives is to fuse technological innovation, entrepreneurship and leadership skills with design to build translational capacity to help solve global challenges, with a focus on topical areas highlighted in Brown’s Strategic Plan.

  • A priority in our evaluation will be the ability to serve in a program leadership role, Academic Director for one of our programs or as Director of the Nelson Center’s Breakthrough Lab as examples.

In general, Professors of the Practice enhance Brown’s pedagogical mission through qualifications and experience that are earned primarily through professional, rather than scholarly, activities. Professors of the Practice are appointed based on their professional and/or academic experience, on their ability to serve the projected academic needs of the hiring group, and on their teaching effectiveness. Appointments are initially made for one year. Appointments are reviewed and renewed for periods of up to five years, typically on the anniversary date of the prior appointment.

Full time Professor of the Practice appointments in the School of Engineering assume a four-course teaching load per academic year with non-teaching leadership roles serving in lieu of one or more such courses if mutually agreed. General criteria for Practice ranks are.

  • Assistant Professor of the Practice. Professional with academic training and experience relevant to the topics noted above who has documented qualities or significant potential as a teacher and a record of professional accomplishment that has earned a local or regional reputation.
  • Associate Professor of the Practice. Professional who has achieved a national reputation in her/his professional field and who has demonstrated effectiveness as a teacher. Additional requirements can include senior-level professional licensing, college-level teaching experience, a position of leadership within the profession, or a record of publication.
  • Professor of the Practice. Professional who has achieved a national or international reputation in her/his professional field and who has demonstrated effectiveness as a teacher and a leader in the field. Additional requirements (beyond those of an Associate appointment) might include leadership positions in professional societies, awards or honors for professional achievement, or experience consulting for or participating in governmental decision making about the field in question as examples.

Professors of the Practice are expected to maintain involvement in practice. This may include continued industry engagement, academic research, new venture creation/funding, administrative service/ leadership roles in support of the university or some combination of such activities. Professors of the Practice retain all rights to any intellectual property they develop (unless developed under grant funding at the university) and can be granted unpaid leave to pursue their practice initiatives. Professors of the Practice are non-voting members of the university faculty and, as such, are not eligible for sabbatical, scholarly leave, or tenure.    

Full time Professors of the Practice are voting members within the IMDE Group with expectations that they will (a) Develop and deliver a strong curricular vision for the SoE IMDE Group; (b) Build fruitful relationships with the Nelson Center and other critical cross-campus stakeholders; and (c) Play an integral role in strategic growth as a critical builder of programmatic capabilities within SoE. Applicants must hold graduate degrees in either engineering, design, business, finance, economics, computer science, or other STEM disciplines (PhD preferred).

  • Broad industry experience with career advancement to a managerial level
  • Excellent teaching record with undergraduate and/or postgraduate students
  • Experience building new and novel initiatives within an industry or academic setting

 Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to communicate ideas and concepts clearly, effectively and convincingly across disparate audiences
  • High level of analytical capability
  • Ability to make significant contributions to the management of the IMDE Group
  • Proven skills in leading, motivating, developing and managing critical stakeholders
  • Excellent leadership, organizational and management skills
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Ability to work within multidisciplinary teams and with pan-campus stakeholders
  • Ability to collaborate with others both internally and externally
