Summary

The Division for Academic Success in the Office of the Senior Vice President for Health Sciences (OSVPHS) seeks applicants for our Academic Counselor position. The Academic Counselor plans and facilitates innovative programs for students enrolled in health sciences programs. The Academic Counselor provides services related to career counseling in health sciences, instruction in learning strategies and assessment of learning needs for students in health sciences programs.

Typical Duties

– Determine eligibility for disability-related services by conducting intake interviews and
reviewing documentation.

– Review requests for accommodations and collaborate with faculty, academic departments and
DAS staff to facilitate implementation.

– Provide one on one and group counseling in academic and cognitive skills necessary for
success in professional-level health sciences curriculum.

– Provide consultations and referral for students who suspect they may have a variety of
disabilities.

– Consult with program advisors and other faculty to coordinate academic and disability support
services to students.

– Conduct preliminary assessments to identify the presence of a disability and make appropriate
referrals for further testing.

– Develop student support initiatives for students in health sciences to promote a positive
learning environment.

– Collaborate with faculty and staff to identify specific needs for academic support and tutoring
services based on course content and needs of students in their programs.

– Organize orientation programs during the academic year to inform students, faculty and staff
of academic and disability support services available through this office.

– Additional duties as assigned by the Assistant and/or Director.

Required Qualifications

– Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology, Counseling, or related field

– Experience in disability services with post secondary students with disabilities

– Theoretical and practical knowledge of a variety of disabilities and reasonable accommodations

– Knowledge of technical standards and their application in graduate health sciences programs

– Knowledge of diagnostic testing procedures

– Strong ability to analyze diagnostic testing documentation in order to determine disabilities and develop reasonable and appropriate accommodations

– Knowledge of study strategies appropriate at the graduate/professional level of education; experience developing learning skills programs

– Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as an employee at VCU

Preferred Qualifications

– Master’s degree

– Direct work experience with students in professional schools of health sciences

– Ability to develop and deliver presentations to groups of students, faculty, and professional colleagues to increase understanding and awareness of the needs of students with disabilities, and the general population of students enrolled in professional health sciences programs
