Brief Description of Duties

The Student Activities Specialist of the University of the District of Columbia Community College campus reports directly to the Director of Student Life. The Student Activities Specialist is responsible for creating a dynamic student experience and fostering co-curricular learning through program development and planning, student organization/club oversight, mentoring student leaders, and providing support designed to enhance the growth, learning and success of all students. The Student Activities Specialist assesses student engagement trends and develops a student engagement plan that is responsive to the interests, needs and concerns of students and is aligned with the mission, goals, and policies of Student Life.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Manage student engagement planning, implementation and evaluation to ensure co-curricular programs and services function effectively to meet their educational mission consistent with University policies.
  • Oversee student clubs, organizations and classes and serve as advisor to the Student Government Association. Provide support and training to foster effective organizational management and promote leadership development, school pride, community engagement, cultural competence, and career readiness.
  • Assess student needs, review university and national data sets and evaluate outcomes of current programs and services. Develop new educational, social, cultural, recreational programs, resources and out of classroom learning experiences to address gaps and to create pathways for involvement that promote the development of specified competencies.
  • Develop and manage budgets for the Office and Student Activities fees. Chair the Student Fee Allocation Committee and ensure appropriate student budgeting and timely disbursement of funds.
  • Maintain regular, positive interaction with students, follow-up with student concerns and refer students to university and community resources.
  • Guide faculty/staff advisors management of clubs and organizations, develop and facilitate training for advisors and track programs and events to ensure compliance with University policies and procedures.
  • Liaise with faculty and campus leadership to develop partnerships that support co-curricular linkages, increase faculty involvement, strengthen programs and coordinate campus-wide events.
  • Develop a communication plan in collaboration with Director of Student Life to enhance use of social media and on-line platforms (e.g. Presence) to promote student participation in activities and programs, build community and students’ connection to the university, monitor scheduled events, and effectively coordinate activities with other university programs.
  • Coordinates travel for clubs/organizations and scheduled events that include certified caterers, entertainers and other vendors and make purchases on behalf of clubs/organizations that are relevant to Student Life and Services.
  • Review policies and procedures and develop and/or revise of Student Life handbooks, manuals and resources.
  • Lead the implementation and management of Presence an online, interactive student engagement platform for student organizations.
  • Serves on University-wide committees such as Orientation, Founders’ Day,Convocation and Commencement.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in college student personnel, psychology, social work, education or related field. (Master’s degree preferred)
  • Minimum of three (3) years professional experience in leadership development, student activities, student organizational support and program planning within student affairs in a post-secondary institution.
  • Direct experience working with students from diverse backgrounds; an understanding of how these identities impact their transition into university life and a track record of creative, responsive and effective programming for a diverse, non-traditional student population.
  • Must be able to travel between various University campuses​​​​​​

E mployment Benefits: Depending upon length of appointment, selectee may or may not be eligible for full benefits such as health and life insurance, annual (vacation) and sick leave and will be covered under the University of the District of Columbia's retirement plan (TIAA-CREF).
