About the Position:
The College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (NSM) is one of eight colleges at CSUF and contains five departments. The college offers through its departments and programs, baccalaureate degrees in all disciplines and master's degrees in biological science, chemistry, geology, physics and mathematics. We are seeking an exceptional individual to join our Chemistry and Biochemistry team as the Equipment Technician III, Electro-Mechanical. The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude and an active, energetic mind that is characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness.

Troubleshoot, repair, maintain, calibrate, and test mechanical, electro-mechanical, analog and/or digital scientific and laboratory equipment or apparatus such as monitoring devices, programming and timing devices, signal generators, meters, gauges, test chambers, power supplies, relay controls, analytical measuring equipment, microprocessor-controlled instruments. Isolate problem(s) including using and/or creating diagnostic software as needed to locate malfunction(s). Performs routine and preventive maintenance on electro-mechanical, electronic, and electronic test equipment in the teaching and research labs, develop plans, methods, and techniques to prevent and rectify electrical and mechanical equipment malfunctions. Performs mechanical, electro-mechanical, or electronic repair(s). Performs electronic repairs to system, board, or component level; calibrates and/or tests for proper operation. Assists and/or oversees vendor warranty repairs. Following general description of functions and schematics from professional and technical personnel, constructs electronic equipment such as computer-interfaced prototypes, microprocessor-controlled devices, or test instruments. Generates block diagram(s), designs relevant circuits and circuit board layout, write software to drive microprocessor(s), and select components. Builds using hand and power tools such as soldering guns, drill presses, torches, band saws, grinders, etc. Tests, debugs, and modifies as necessary to ensure proper operation. Prepares appropriate documentation such as parts layout, schematic(s), and calibration procedure. Assists faculty in design and fabrication of prototype electro-mechanical equipment or modification of existing equipment. Consults with professional and technical personnel on design concept, equipment requirement(s), feasibility of fabrication and safety features and design computer interfaces with existing apparatus such as AC-DC power supplies, photo-relay circuits, timing devices, shock apparatus, visual and audio stimulus circuits, operant boxes, or recorder interfaces. Prepares for, modify and install commercially-built electronic and mechanical apparatus for use in experimental or research applications. Tests, diagnose, adjust and calibrate to appropriate standards. Develops inventory lists. Order, stock, catalog and store electronic components such as transistors, resistors, circuit boards, capacitors, inductors, tubes, connectors, etc. Confer with faculty, staff, clients, vendors, and/or supervisors in determining equipment problems or fulfilling service requests. Trains students, staff, and faculty on the proper use of scientific equipment may direct the work of others. May maintain technical reference library and maintain database files for equipment inventory. May perform incidental maintenance or repair on computers. Other duties as assigned.

Essential Qualifications:
Three years of progressively responsible journey-level or skilled experience in the maintenance, repair, and operation of scientific or technical equipment in the specialty area including one year involving design modifications and fabrication of complex and highly technical equipment. Two years of semi-skilled experience maintaining and repairing scientific or technical equipment as part of instructional support activities may be substituted for one year of the required experience. Two years of trade school or technical arts training with specialization in assigned area as well completion of an apprenticeship program or completion of full military specialization in the required type of equipment maintenance and repair may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

Comprehensive knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the construction, installation, maintenance, repair, and operation of equipment in the area of specialization. Thorough knowledge of equipment design theory. Knowledge of drafting techniques. Thorough knowledge of repair, maintenance, troubleshooting, and overhaul. Ability to apply previous experience and knowledge to the design of new applications. Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate the work of technical projects. Ability to review and prepare specifications for technical equipment. Ability to design, fabricate, and assemble devices. Ability to coordinate equipment repair performed by other specialists. Ability to analyze equipment problems and determine what repairs are needed. Ability to install, replace, repair, and maintain a wide variety of equipment for the area of job assignment. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships. Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position. Ability to make arithmetic computations when required. Ability to use Microsoft Excel to maintain equipment inventory and emergency contact information. Working knowledge of all machine tools, woodworking tools, welding equipment, hand tools, and associated safety requirements to design, build, maintain, trouble-shoot, and install scientific equipment, and to run the woodshop.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

Preferred Qualifications:
A master’s degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, electrical engineering, or similar field. Experience in maintaining and/or repairing sophisticated laboratory equipment such as Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), spectrometers, Liquid Chromatography and Gas Chromatography instruments, and Mass Spectrometers. General knowledge or electronic and mechanical test equipment and equipment used in teaching and research laboratories. Knowledge of equipment design and equipment computer interfacing. Ability to write standard operating procedures for electronic and mechanical equipment and to train students, staff and faculty on use of that equipment.
