Job Summary:

As a Clinical Instructor with the Family Legal Advocacy and Supports Legal Clinic (FLASC), the person in this position will screen requests for assistance from community partners, teach students family law and lawyering skills, manage case work, and supervise clinic students, meeting regularly as they handle cases, under the supervision of the Family Court Clinic Director.
There is an opportunity for research, writing, and advocacy relating to the impact and outcomes of providing pre-petition legal services to families.

Responsibilities:

a. Assist in developing curriculum, courses, and mission of the FLASC program consistent with Law School needs and objectives.

b. Teach in the FLASC, e.g.:
-provide substantive instruction in family law, lawyering skills, and related areas.
-screen and assign appropriate cases to clinic students.
-conduct individual conferences with FLASC students as appropriate.
-review, critique, and approve documents prepared by FLASC students in their cases.
-provide regular written evaluations of students' work.

c. Appear on behalf of FLASC clients in court and administrative proceedings (and manage the
resolution of outstanding issues).

d. Attend regular staff meetings and coordinate with other clinical faculty, as well as collaborate
and teach in areas of common interest among the Law School's civil legal clinics.

e. Assist in legislative and administrative advocacy on issues of interest to the FLASC and its
students.

Education:

Required
Terminal Degree
JD required

Qualifications:

Experience in representing individuals in family law cases, managing casework, and addressing civil legal needs of low-income citizens required. Experience in clinical legal education or other teaching experience preferred.

License/Certification:

Required
State Bar of Wisconsin membership
Admitted to the Wisconsin Bar or eligible for admission to the Wisconsin Bar by Sept. 1, 2022 required.

Additional Information:

The successful applicant will serve a one-year probationary period. The position is initially for one year, but may be extended for a second year dependent upon performance, available funding, and department need. The position then may be extended for a third year and, after the third year, may become a renewable (permanent) position, all dependent upon available grant funding and department need.
