Job Summary:

The Associate Director will work with the Composition and Rhetoric program of the English Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The Associate Director will work with the Director of English 100 to support the administration of that program and will work with members of the Composition/Rhetoric area to expand offerings in writing at the undergraduate level. The Associate Director will also teach courses in writing at the undergraduate level.

English 100 is the English Department's main contribution to the University's first-year communications requirement. It is principally a TA-taught course, with between 55 and 65 sections offered each semester.

Working closely with the faculty Director and graduate student Assistant Directors of English 100, the Associate Director will:
* Oversee the day-to-day administration of English 100:
- participate in supervising course TAs along with Director and Assistant Directors
- facilitate communication among students, instructors, and administrators
- organize staff training and orientation
- assist in recruitment and hiring of Assistant Directors and non-English Department TAs
- manage course enrollments
- prepare curricular materials
- maintain and update the program website
- coordinate English 100 liaisons with campus housing, university libraries, FIGs, ESL, etc.
- schedule faculty visits of TA and instructor classes
- assist with ongoing assessment and research in the program
- oversee records for the program
* Design and teach undergraduate courses in writing at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels (3 per year)
* Work collaboratively with members of the Composition/Rhetoric program to develop and enrich undergraduate writing at UW-Madison

Responsibilities:

Provides classroom, online, and/or laboratory instruction associated with more than one lecture or laboratory course, assists with the design and execution of administrative functions associated with academic instruction and the development of pedagogy/andragogy or assessment tools and resources to support quality student learning. Provides for-credit instruction in formats such as classroom, online and/or laboratory settings, including grading. Serves as an instructor of record.
  • 10% Designs curriculum and/or techniques for instruction in a disciplinary area and suggests new ways of effective instruction in courses within that discipline
  • 5% Assesses learner performance and prepares reports recommending instructional improvements
  • 10% Develops teaching techniques that enhance course effectiveness in alignment with desired outcomes and established strategy and trains faculty and other instructional staff in use of said instructional techniques and programs
  • 5% Presents evaluations of teaching methods and techniques to those in the institution and elsewhere
  • 60% Provides classroom, online and/or laboratory instruction, including grading
  • 5% Develops grant proposals for instructional development and may serve as principal or co-principal investigator on grants to develop new teaching methods in the discipline
  • 5% Assists in defining the objectives of the program and plays a major role in carrying out program duties

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have a minimum of two years experience teaching writing at the post-secondary level; demonstrated experience in writing program administration; a deep commitment to undergraduate writing; preparation to teach writing courses from the beginning to advanced levels and an interest in innovative approaches to writing curriculum (such as, for example, writing with technology, ethnic or cultural rhetorics, multilingual writing, or service learning); training or interest in conducting assessment of and research on writing programs; the ability to help train and motivate a diverse group of writing teachers; ability to work with various campus units; excellent oral and written communication skills; the personal, political, and interpersonal skills to work collaboratively with faculty, academic staff, teaching assistants, and undergraduate students; and strong leadership and administrative skills.
