Veterinary Endocrinology, Tenure Track or Health Programs Faculty System (clinical track)

The Department of Pathobiology and Diagnostic Investigation (PDI) and the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL) in the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) at Michigan State University (MSU) invite applications for two positions in endocrinology that are designed to enhance service, research, and education in clinical and diagnostic areas. One position is a tenure track or Health Programs (HP) Faculty System (clinical track) appointment primarily based in PDI. The other position is a Health Programs (HP) Faculty System (clinical track) appointment primarily based in VDL. Applicants for both positions must have a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree; other requirements and anticipated responsibilities vary by position.

For the PDI tenure track position, a PhD is required and board eligibility or certification and/or at least 5 years of clinical practice in endocrinology is desired. Applicants interested in appointment in the tenure track system are expected to develop an independent and externally funded research program while providing some support to the VDL Endocrinology diagnostic service.

For the VDL and PDI HP position, board eligibility/certification and/or an additional graduate degree are desirable, but extensive clinical experience may be substituted. This HP system faculty position will have a primary emphasis on diagnostic service (providing written interpretations and phone consultations) with exciting opportunities to support the research missions of the college through collaborative and interdisciplinary research among MSU's vast network.  Successful endocrinologists within the section have come from a variety of backgrounds including clinical pathology, theriogenology and reproductive endocrinology, large and small animal internal medicine and primary care, as well as veterinary biomedical research.

The VDL, a service unit in the MSU College of Veterinary Medicine, is a premier, full-service, fully accredited veterinary diagnostic laboratory, and a member of key federal networks charged with protecting animal and public health. On average, the Laboratory performs over one million tests per year, serving the MSU Veterinary Medical Center (VMC) as well as clients in all 50 states and more than 25 foreign countries. The Endocrinology Section, world-renowned for gold standard tests for endocrine disorders in animals, receives the most submissions and offers assays to assess thyroid, adrenal, parathyroid, reproductive, pancreatic, pituitary, and gastric function in multiple species. The VMC is a major referral center for companion animals, horses, livestock, laboratory, zoo, and wildlife species with outstanding veterinary medical professionals and facilities. It offers an excellent environment for professional growth and advancement in endocrinology.

For both positions, a dedication to providing outstanding diagnostic service for colleagues within the VMC, as well as for private veterinary practitioners and clients who submit diagnostic material through the VDL is required. Excellent written and interpersonal skills are necessary. Participation in teaching of veterinary and graduate students is a possibility. The extensive archive of endocrinology data and current cases offer excellent opportunities for clinical research.
