Associate Professor / Assistant Professor (4 positions)

1. Associate / Assistant Professor of
Chinese Philosophy
The appointee is expected to teach courses at the undergraduate and
postgraduate degree levels related to Philosophy. Background
in Chinese philosophy is preferred. Teaching duties may
include undergraduate teaching for both the University-wide General
Education curriculum as well as the home Major, the B.A. degree
curriculum in Religion, Philosophy and Ethics. Teaching at the
Master’s level may also be required based upon Department needs and
at the discretion of the Department Head/Master’s Programme
Director. Additionally, applicants are expected to conduct
independent research in the fields of Philosophy as well as to
assist senior academic staff in supervising research postgraduate
students, research assistants (RAs) and teaching assistants (TAs)
as applicable.
Applicants should possess a relevant PhD degree with a strong
publication record and teaching experience at the tertiary
level. Demonstrable research competence and a forward
publishing trajectory in affiliation with one of HKBU’s
interdisciplinary research labs (https://interdisciplinary-research.hkbu.edu.hk/our-labs)
will be a great advantage. Applicants should also demonstrate
commitment to organising programme-related activities in outreach
and when generating community impact beyond the campus in relation
to wider Hong Kong society. Administrative duties will be
assigned as required by the Department/Faculty.
2. Associate / Assistant Professor of
Social Scientific Study of Religion
The Department welcomes applicants with academic background in
Religion and Society (broadly defined), including, but not
exclusive to, sociology of religion, psychology of religion,
religion and politics as well as gender studies. Teaching
duties may include undergraduate teaching for both the
University-wide General Education curriculum as well as the home
Major, the B.A. degree curriculum in Religion, Philosophy and
Ethics. Teaching at the Master’s level may also be required
based upon Department needs and at the discretion of the Department
Head/Master’s Programme Director. Additionally, applicants
are expected to conduct independent research as well as to assist
senior academic staff in supervising research postgraduate
students, research assistants (RAs) and teaching assistants (TAs)
as applicable.

Additional desirable qualifications include experience in
AI-related transdisciplinary studies and/or technology
ethics. Teaching duties may include undergraduate teaching
for both the University-wide General Education curriculum as well
as the home Major, the B.A. degree curriculum in Religion,
Philosophy and Ethics. Teaching at the Master’s level may
also be required based upon Department needs and at the discretion
of the Department Head/Master’s Programme Director.

4. Associate / Assistant Professor of
Chinese Religion
The appointee is expected to teach courses at the undergraduate and
postgraduate degree levels related to Chinese religion.
Background in Daoism, Chinese Buddhism, and/or Chinese popular
religion is preferred. Additional desirable qualifications
include experience in health and bioethical studies, comparative
religion, and/or interreligious dialogue. Teaching duties may
include undergraduate teaching for both the University-wide General
Education curriculum as well as the home Major, the B.A. degree
curriculum in Religion, Philosophy and Ethics. Teaching at
the master’s level may also be required based upon Department needs
and at the discretion of the Department Head/Master’s Programme
Director. Additionally, applicants are expected to conduct
independent research as well as to assist senior academic staff in
supervising research postgraduate students, research assistants
(RAs) and teaching assistants (TAs) as applicable.

The initial appointment will be offered on a fixed-term contract of
three years commencing September 2022/January 2023.
Re-appointment thereafter will be subject to mutual agreement and
availability of funding.
Remuneration package includes retirement/gratuity benefits, annual
leave, medical and dental scheme, housing assistance and relocation
allowance wherever appropriate.
Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and
experience.
