Responsibilities

Tenure-Track nine-month Assistant Professor, Aquatic Ecologist: The position requires a broadly trained aquatic ecologist with experience in long-term monitoring and large river research. The faculty member must be able to teach General Zoology, Ichthyology, Freshwater Biology, and Streams Ecology. Ability to teach Biometrics, Advanced Analytic Tools in Environmental Science, and/or Integrated Environmental Decision Making is desirable. The position requires establishing an active research program (involving Master's and undergraduate students) supported by grants and in collaboration with WIU's Environmental Science Ph.D. Program and external agencies.

Requirements:

Required qualifications For tenure-track appointment, the candidate will have a Ph.D. in the Biology-related field of aquatic ecology with experience in long-term monitoring and large river research. The faculty member must be able to teach General Zoology, Ichthyology, Freshwater Biology, and Streams Ecology.

Preferred qualifications Candidates are preferred who have experience obtaining external funding, post-doctoral experience, and evidence of training students on larger river research projects. Teaching experience is preferred, and the ability to teach Biometrics, Advanced Analytic Tools in Environmental Science, and/or Integrated Environmental Decision Making is desirable, with the latter two courses being 700-level offerings in the Environmental Science Ph.D. Program.

For a degree to be considered, it must be conferred from a regionally accredited degree-granting institution of higher education (or equivalent from an international accrediting body). Unless otherwise stated, the degree must be "in hand" at the time of application

The Department

The Department of Biological Sciences offers majors in Biology (with options in Botany, Medical Sciences, Microbiology, Teacher Certification, and Zoology) and Clinical Laboratory Science each leading to a Bachelor of Science degree. There are approximately 250 undergraduate majors, and minors are offered in Zoology, Botany, and Microbiology. The Department offers a Master's of Science in Biology degree and currently has about 40 graduate students. There are 12 full-time faculty members and two full-time academic advisors. The Department has the Alice L. Kibbe Field Station (www.wiu.edu/kibbe) located 45 miles west of campus on the Mississippi River, as well as the Rodney and Bertha Fink Environmental Studies Field Laboratory and Conservancy located 2 miles from campus. The Department also houses modern analytical and molecular biology equipment such as a high-pressure liquid chromatography system, microarray scanner, DNA sequencer, quantitative real-time PCR system, bioanalyzer, etc. For more information about the University and our Department, visit our website (www.wiu.edu/biology).

The University

Since 1902, Western Illinois University has provided outstanding educational opportunities to individuals in west central Illinois and well beyond our region and state. WIU's traditional residential campus in Macomb, Illinois, is the educational, cultural and athletic center of the region, while the WIU-Quad Cities non-residential branch campus in Moline, Illinois, is the only public university in the immediate Quad Cities region.

Macomb is an Amtrak city with twice-daily service to Chicago.

WIU-Quad Cities: The only public university in the Quad Cities area, WIU-QC offers select undergraduate and graduate programs, including a doctorate in education and a doctorate in environmental studies, at its non-residential campus in Moline, IL (population 44,000).

WIU's Macomb campus is the educational, cultural and athletic center of the region. Annually, 12 major theatrical and dance productions and studio shows are performed, along with outstanding concerts, lectures, presentations, films, dance performances and more. The Gwendolyn Brooks and Casa Latina cultural centers offer programs and activities focusing on Black and Hispanic cultures, while the Women's Center promotes gender equity through education, support and advocacy. WIU's student organization for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning and ally (LGBTQ*A) community provides resources, support and programming. These cultural and resource centers promote WIU's goal of enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion through educational programming and advocacy.

The University's athletics program, based on the Macomb campus, sponsors 17 NCAA Division I intercollegiate men's and women's varsity sports. Football competes in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision through the Missouri Valley Football Conference; all other varsity sports compete at the Division I level through The Summit League.
