Job Description:

APPOINTMENT: August 2022

RESPONSIBILITIES: Western Illinois University Department of Broadcasting and Journalism is seeking a full-time Instructor to teach sports production, broadcast writing and performance classes for the Macomb Campus. Applicants should be able to teach a broad range of courses in media production as well as entry-level Broadcasting classes. Significant field work at university sporting events supervising multi camera sports productions. Other responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must have a Master's degree in Broadcasting or related field OR Master's degree in a non-broadcasting field with professional broadcast experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates with experience in one or more of the following areas will be given added consideration: the ability to teach production courses at the university level, demonstrated experience in professional broadcast writing and production, sports broadcasting, on-air broadcast experience and proficiency in video-editing software.

For a degree to be considered, it must be conferred from a regionally accredited degree-granting institution of higher education (or equivalent from an international accrediting body). Unless otherwise stated, the degree must be "in hand" at the time of application.

THE DEPARTMENT: The department offers bachelor of arts degrees in Broadcasting and Journalism with options in Advertising/Public Relations, Broadcast Production, Multimedia Journalism, and Sports Broadcasting. In addition, the department offers minors in Broadcasting and Journalism, Advertising/Public Relations, and Sports Broadcasting. The department is an energized program with dedicated students, who receive valuable hands-on experience and mentorship. Faculty and students are active in student organizations (National Broadcasting Society, National Association of Black Journalists, Students in Illinois News Broadcasters Association). Students are recognized yearly with state, regional and national awards (NBS Grand Prize, IBS National award, BEA Award of Excellence, NATAS Mid-America Crystal Pillar) for their productions. Students produce and announce live sporting events for ESPN using a high-definition remote truck. They also apply their skills in a HD control room and studio for our student-produced newscast, NEWS3 (weekly) and a morning news/talk show (bi-weekly). Students can also gain experience working on our FM radio station, WIUS. The department has a reputation for academic and professional excellence. THE UNIVERSITY: Since 1902, Western Illinois University has provided outstanding educational opportunities to individuals in west central Illinois and well beyond our region and state. WIU's Macomb campus is the educational, cultural and athletic center of the region. Annually, 12 major theatrical and dance productions and studio shows are performed, along with outstanding concerts, lectures, presentations, films, dance performances and more. The Gwendolyn Brooks and Casa Latina cultural centers offer programs and activities focusing on Black and Hispanic cultures, while the Women's Center promotes gender equity through education, support and advocacy. WIU's student organization for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning and ally (LGBTQ*A) community provides resources, support and programming. The University's athletics program, based on the Macomb campus, sponsors 17 NCAA Division I intercollegiate men's and women's varsity sports. Football competes in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision through the Missouri Valley Football Conference; all other varsity sports compete at the Division I level through The Summit League.
