Job Summary

The Director is a strategic right-hand person to the leadership of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics, an academic unit currently home to 25 full-time faculty and two professional staff enrolling more than 3300 FTE B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. students, and to a growing portfolio of sponsored research. You will help drive and implement MEM’s strategic business plan, supporting faculty, students, industry, federal and non-government organization partners and an external advisory board.

Essential Functions
  • Support department leadership in establishing and launching an external advisory board which will help transform undergraduate and graduate student experiences, advance alumni engagement, and expand the reach of sponsored research
  • Drive a cohesive approach aligning to the MEM Strategic Plan including development of efficient operations and workflow, communications planning and governance, community-building, training and stakeholder management, and space planning
  • Partner with department leadership to define, prepare and communicate plans, including staffing, faculty and student affairs and industry and federal partnerships
  • Build connections across the College of Engineering and campus to ensure alignment and collaboration
  • Collaborate with leadership to evaluate data that informs patterns and trends in recruiting students to translate to actionable goals to strengthen recruitment
  • Supervisory and staff development
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 15+ years working with executive level leadership
  • Experience driving execution and adoption of key strategic programs
  • Ability to work in a flexible manner in line with the organization’s objectives and willingness to undertake other duties as reasonably requested
  • Project management skills and experience
  • Excellent verbal, written and presentation communication skills
  • A record of accomplishment in developing strong strategic partnerships, often managing a range of internal and external stakeholders
Preferred Qualifications
  • Proven ability to develop and lead the implementation of communications strategy, policy, and operational plans, to a successful outcome, across a medium or large organization with dispersed management
  • Dedicated professional who leads through ambiguity and independently runs projects with minimal direction
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and executive presence
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with a focus on structure and execution
  • Force for change who is open to new insights, accepts challenges and leads with positive energy
  • Trusted professional with the ability to lead strong personalities and drive open items to effective resolution
  • Ability to think and act creatively, championing and promoting new ideas that contribute to the goals of the organization and the department
