Position Information

This is a full-time management (MPP) position in the Office of the Provost. MPP employees serve at the pleasure of the campus President. MPPs do not serve a probationary period and never receive permanent status.

This position is a "designated position" in the California State University's Conflict of Interest Code. The successful candidate accepting this position is required to file Conflict of Interest forms subject to the regulations of the Fair Political Practices Commission.

CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

The person holding this position is considered a `mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

Major Duties

Reporting directly to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Associate Vice President of Academic Advising and Career Development provides executive-level leadership that advances the university's mission through effective, efficient and strategic support of the Provost's priorities and vision for the university and fosters a commitment to improving student learning, providing equitable access to support services, closing achievement and opportunity gaps, and advancing completion. The AVP of Academic Advising and Career Development is responsible for creating a campus environment that supports and sustains student success through a collaborative process with various university and community constituencies. The incumbent provides leadership, oversight, and coordination of the five college-based student success centers, the Toro Success Collaborative (TSC), career development, and transfer programs. The incumbent will collaborate with Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, and Information Technology in order to create an advising experience that integrates students' curricular, co-curricular and career goals and requirements. The incumbent, in collaboration with University partners, is responsible for the effective innovation, creation, maintenance, data tracking, implementation, and assessment of all academic advisement policies and procedures.

Qualifications

Required Education & Experience: A terminal degree from an accredited institution. A record of scholarly and professional accomplishments, competence in college/university teaching, and successful and increasingly responsible academic leadership experience at a minimum level of program director, vice chair, or department chair, with at least three years of successful leadership experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledgeable about advising and career development practices that support students to identify and leverage their cultural wealth and personal strengths and apply them across their educational journeys; demonstrable evidence of the ability to work effectively and collaboratively with a diverse faculty, staff, administration, and student population; strong interpersonal and communication skills (verbal, written, presentation and critical thinking); and a proven record of collaborative leadership, a commitment to equity and student success and to advising undergraduate students.

Preferred Qualifications: Effective leadership for strategic planning, with the ability to inspire, empower, and provide a clear structure for the college-based student success teams that allows them to thrive in their roles. A broad educational perspective and an investment in academic identity and career development, an appreciation of the unique and common needs of the university's departments, units, and colleges. A deep understanding of and respect for the CSUDH commitment to shared governance and demonstrable success in working with advising teams to achieve well-defined goals at the college or university level. Timely decision-making after listening and communicating broadly to build consensus. Ability to prioritize financial and other resources and to develop and advocate for creative solutions in an environment of limited resources. Experience with academic curriculum and policy development. Experience advising and mentoring undergraduate students. Demonstrated experience in working with and implementing programs in a diverse university.

  • Provide strategic leadership to college-based student success centers, which includes coordinating efforts across colleges to ensure alignment and directing efforts within each student success center to ensure students are receiving appropriate guidance.
  • Supervise directors of each student success center and the career center and the coordinator of the Toro Success Collaborative.
  • Provide strategic leadership for academic advising and retention initiatives within each college-based student success center.
  • Lead efforts to train and equip staff across all student success centers to utilize technology to help provide proactive advising and support services for students.
  • Be responsive to changing needs of students and faculty by implementing assessment for continual growth and development.
  • Lead efforts to balance the unique advising and career development needs of each college at CSUDH with a coherent, consistent and integrated approach to advising and career development across the colleges.
  • Ensure advisors, career coaches, etc. receive continuous professional development and technical support to facilitate the implementation of best practices within the career center and student success centers.
  • Use data, research, and best practices to design and implement effective academic advising and career development programs.
  • Monitor and provide periodic reports outlining performance outcomes and assessment of Student Success Centers, Career Center, and Transfer programs.
  • Develop a comprehensive communications plan to share student success and progress that includes a central website with updates.
  • Work closely with the Provost's office to utilize effective and rational budget projections and principles to allocate resources to student success centers, career center, and transfer programs. 30%
  • Establish effective communication practices regarding advising and retention policies and practices across the university in order to smooth student pathways to entrance, to progress milestones, and to graduation.
  • Create and maintain a strong collegiate and inclusive culture of advising, retention, and career planning and oversee the assessment of this effectiveness.
  • Strengthen the coordination, collaboration and support of all university academic advising and career development services.
  • Coordinate with all university divisions in prioritizing the engagement of incoming students with strong retention programming and advising, focusing on first-time first-year and transfer students.
  • Collaborate with all university divisions in supporting students' college completion to ensure the removal of administrative barriers and provide students with support and resources for post-graduation success.
  • Serve as a key member on cross divisional committees and work groups designed to support the matriculation and development of students 10% Performs other duties as assigned.
