Job Summary
Supervise Public Safety Officers and other department employees in enforcement of local, state, and federal laws, and in provision of personal, real property, and equipment security throughout campus. Lead and conduct investigations of criminal violations on Georgia Southern University campus and arrest and prosecute law violators. Provide Crime Prevention education by developing and presenting a variety of crime prevention topics, attending crime prevention events, training and presentations in support of the university mission. This position has been identified by Federal Law (Jeanne Clery Act) as a Campus Security Authority (CSA), with significant student and campus responsibilities. CSA 's are obligated to report crimes reported to them which occurred on campus, in public areas bordering campus and in certain non-campus buildings owned or controlled (leased) by the University.

Due to the Governor's approval for the Cost of Living Adjustment to Fiscal Years 2022 and 2023, final salaries at the time of hire may be impacted, but will not be lower than what is advertised.

Responsibilities
  • Perform related duties as assigned to support the mission of the University
  • Testify in courts and at hearings regarding evidence and statements obtained during investigations
  • Prepare arrest warrants for subjects charged or to be charged with various crimes
  • Book and photograph offenders arrested for criminal acts
  • Coordinate searches of residences and/or vehicles after having prepared a search warrant and having presented it to a judge for his/her concurrence and signature
  • Answer subpoenas for court appearances until cases have been adjudicated
  • Assist outside law enforcement agencies with locating subjects needed in their investigations
  • Escort dignitaries, when on campus, who may be a security risk
  • Perform specialized patrols and 'stake-outs' to deter and/or detect criminal activity
  • Conduct periodic inventory inquiry of local pawnshops in an attempt to locate stolen items from campus
  • Work special events including sporting events, social events, parades, large gatherings, etc
  • Make detailed reports of investigations and records in case file
  • Follow all safety and other risk management policies in performance of work
  • Maintain, repair and clean tools, equipment and work areas
  • Enforce laws and regulations of University
  • Prevent and or investigate crimes, and apprehend criminals
  • Perform duties of a specialized function which require knowledge and abilities acquired through experience on force
  • Patrol designated areas of campus to preserve law and order and prevent and/or discover commission of crimes.
  • Answer calls and complaints involving fire, traffic, and other incidents, misdemeanors, and felonies, and take appropriate actions
  • Prepare records and reports, and oversee reports of subordinates
  • Work on call schedule
  • Serve as Crime Prevention Coordinator or Officer
  • Advise patrol shift supervisors and respond after hours for investigations
  • Provide crime prevention courses to campus communities to include faculty, staff and students
  • Seek out groups and organizations to promote crime prevention topics and establish proactive programs and community relationships
  • Manage video surveillance for department
  • Coordinate various criminal investigations and violations of Georgia Southern University rules and regulations with Judicial Affairs
  • Serve as lead investigator on cases and supervise officers on the scene
  • Prepare case files for investigations and deliver completed case files to State Court Solicitor and District Attorney for presentation to Grand Jury for possible indictment
  • Process crime scenes for possible lead to perpetrator
  • Maintain chain of custody for any evidence obtained from time of discovery to time of disposal

Required Qualifications
Educational Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent

Other Required Qualifications
  • One or more years of post secondary education/related formal technical training
  • Georgia P.O.S.T (Peace Officer Standards and Training) Certified as a basic law enforcement (police) Peace Officer

Required Experience
  • Three (3) years of related work experience
  • Supervisory experience

Proposed Salary
$23.75 - $24.09 per hour

KNOWLEDGE

  • Knowledge of Georgia Crime Information Center, National Crime Information Center facilities and services
  • Knowledge and/or experience with State Certification process and procedures
  • Knowledgeable about Georgia Law and office policies and procedures
