Position Purpose
Reporting to the Director of Campus Planning, the Assistant Planner will be part of a team who guides the future physical development of Dartmouth. The Planner is responsible for supporting the full range of campus planning functions with an emphasis on planning analyses and space planning; capital projects, including feasibility assessment, programming and preliminary design; and planning that supports a more sustainable campus environment. The Planner works collaboratively to provide quality planning and design solutions. The Planner will help manage projects to deliver results. Projects typically overlap the disciplines of planning, architecture, urban design, landscape architecture, transportation, and preservation. The staff person works on more than one project at a time.
The Assistant Planner is an energetic professional with a superb work ethic and a desire to learn. This individual is a team player, self-starter, and results oriented. They will work on a wide range of project types including master and precinct planning, space programming, feasibility studies, urban and landscape design at multiple scales (campus/site/building). Additionally, they should have an interest in higher education, cultural institutions, academic medical centers, and the opportunities and challenges they face today. The Assistant Planner provides services in support of Dartmouth’s development needs in terms of physical planning and data analysis.

Bachelors plus 3-5 years' experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
- Bachelor’s degree in urban/community planning, geography, landscape design or related discipline required or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Three or more years of relevant experience in campus or community planning.
- Experience working in a consensus-driven environment that involves internal and external stakeholders.
- Familiar with space data, and/or in managing data management systems
- Adept at handling issues that require sensitivity and sound judgment. Experience working in higher education, research, healthcare, government, economic development, and/or college-town planning environment .
- Advanced degree in urban planning, architecture, landscape architecture, sustainability or related discipline preferred. AICP, LSA, or AIA credentials are a plus.
- Strong project management, organizational and analytical skills.
- Knowledge of urban planning concepts including resiliency, design, housing, landscape architecture, and transportation.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to work effectively at all levels of an organization, the ability to work well in teams and independently.
- Ability to meet deadlines while working concurrently on multiple projects.
- Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
- Excellent MS Office skills, including strong Excel skills. Skills with databases, GIS, Adobe Creative Suite preferred.
- High degree of initiative and the ability to work independently.

- Generates scenarios and studies associated with campus-wide physical planning and capital project need in terms of land use, space planning/programming, housing, landscape design, historic preservation, transportation, open space, sustainability/environmental, and development controls.
- Ensures open and timely communication of activities to track and project status, risks and demands for changes to project scope; and other duties as required.
