Job Summary
The University of Colorado Boulder's College of Music Advancement team encourages applications for an Assistant Director of Development. Under the guidance of the Assistant Dean for Advancement, the Assistant Director of Development is responsible for managing a portfolio of annual giving donors and prospects and supporting the College of Music (COM) and the Colorado Shakespeare Festival's (CSF) annual giving channel-based activities. The Assistant Director of Development will also collaborate with the team on alumni engagement initiatives and discovery work. The College of Music Advancement team is a collaborative group of skilled professionals who work closely with the dean and faculty to strategically elevate the College of Music and Colorado Shakespeare Festival.

The College of Music, founded in 1920, is recognized as one of the top comprehensive music schools in the country. The College of Music offers seven degree programs in over 28 fields of study, at the bachelor’s level through the doctorate. Our dedicated and encouraging community of 550 degree-seeking students, 70 full-time faculty, 30 part-time faculty, and 30 professional, technical and administrative staff produces over 350 performances and numerous guest lectures, master-classes, and outreach events each year.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Frontline Fundraising
  • Identify, cultivate, and personally solicit new and recurring donors in a portfolio of major and leadership annual giving prospects capable of making annual gifts of $5,000 to $25,000.
  • Establish fundraising goals around individual solicitations in partnership with the Assistant Dean. Goals will minimally include the number of donor visits, proposals submitted, and dollars raised.
  • Prepare and support the Dean, Faculty, and administrators for visits with top prospects, donors, and other key partners towards the achievement of fundraising and relationship-building outcomes.
  • Lead COM’s efforts to enhance its donor pipeline by using Tessitura and closely coordinating with the CU Presents staff.
  • Set goals and increase participation for scholarship programs and special funds (COM, CSF, and CU Presents) through annual solicitations.
  • Partner with Program Manager for Stewardship & Donor Relations to implement ongoing stewardship and cultivation strategies for membership donors.
Annual Appeals, Solicitations, Membership
  • Manage annual appeal/mass solicitation program including but not limited to four giving societies, end-of-year campaigns, and special programs for COM and CSF.
  • Collaborate with CU Boulder and CU System Advancement Annual Giving teams on annual solicitation plan, Ruffalo Noel Levitz phone-derived solicitations, and crowdfunding opportunities.
  • Assess COM/CSF annual giving data and current practices to achieve annual giving goals determined in partnership with the assistant dean for advancement, supervisor, and annual giving vendors.
  • Actively engage with partners/vendors to complete appeals. Supervise the development of all print and digital appeals, manage mailing lists and segmentation strategy, and coordinate with prospect managers campus wide as needed.
  • Update and refresh any solicitation language on COM, CSF and CU Presents websites and in external messaging.

Assist the Program Manager for Stewardship & Donor Relations to fulfill individual donor membership benefits associated with four critical giving societies:
  1. Takács Quartet Society;
  2. Artist Series;
  3. Eklund Opera
  4. Colorado Shakespeare Festival.
    1. Benefits currently include parking, ticket vouchers, newsletters, and event invitations.


Corporate Sponsorships
  • Partner with COM team, Industry and Foundation Relations officers, and any appropriate advancement colleagues to facilitate and grow a Corporate Sponsorship program for the CSF and Artist Series by developing marketing materials, tracking confirmations, and confirming receipt of sponsorship agreements and benefit delivery.
  • Identify, cultivate, and solicit Artist Series corporate sponsors.
  • Assist the Program Manager for Stewardship & Donor Relations with fulfilling Corporate Sponsorship benefits while also facilitating a working partnership with CU Presents and CU compliance to ensure accurate fair market value of benefits, track membership rosters, and communicate changes to membership benefit structures.
Meetings and Events
  • Report out on the annual giving plan, outcomes, and budget and will make recommendations on budget requests for the annual giving program.
  • Serve as a key member of the COM Advancement team, attends regular Advancement and COM/CSF meetings, becomes proficient in talking about COM/CSF, represents COM/CSF on annual giving committees.
  • Attend donor and community events and represents COM/CSF.

We anticipate this position will support a hybrid format (remote and in-person work).

What We Can Offer

The salary range is $60,000 - $65,920 annually.

Relocation assistance is available for eligible candidates.

What We Require
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 1+ year of experience in fundraising, alumni relations, volunteer engagement, event management and/or related areas.
What You Will Need
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced and sophisticated environment. Ability to adapt to changing situations and priorities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with an ability to develop and maintain interpersonal relationships.
  • Ability to cultivate and solicit donations from individuals at leadership annual gift level ($5,000 - $25,000).
  • Strong organizational, prioritization, and time-management skills.
  • Knowledge of database management tools and experience in data analysis and report generation from large databases.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information discreetly and maintain confidentiality.
  • Sensitivity to and appreciation of cultural, political, and geographical differences with the ability to work well with faculty, staff, alumni, and students from a diverse set of backgrounds.
  • Software used: Microsoft Office Suite, Salesforce, Advance CRM, Cvent.
