Job Summary

The College of Arts and Sciences at CU Boulder encourages applications for a Divisional Manager ! The College of Arts and Sciences comprises more than 60 departments, programs, and centers; approximately 375 permanent staff, 100 temporary employees, and 1000+ faculty members. The College has three academic divisions, each led by a Dean of Division: Arts & Humanities (14 units), Natural Sciences (16 units), and Social Sciences (9 units).

This position reports to the respective Dean of Division (DD), and works as a strategic partner to support the health and success of the division and all departments within. The Divisional Manager provides support on strategic and operational initiatives by serving as a project manager/coordinator and providing assessment on various divisional and departmental data. In collaboration with the DD and key partners in the Dean’s Office, this position works to align departments in the division with college values and divisional goals. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: divisional operational assessment, project management, coordination, implementation, and department support workflows, teaching plans, budgetary, and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives.

The College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Colorado Boulder is the intellectual core of the university, conducting research, scholarship, creative work and education in more than 60 fields. What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Research and Recommendation
  • Assist Divisional Deans and college leadership on strategic matters related to divisional budgetary and operational planning including: faculty and staff recruitment and retention, program evaluation, student enrollments, teaching needs, etc.
  • Work with DD to develop/update comprehensive plan for Division's growth and continued success.
  • In support of the DD, and in coordination with relevant team members, align departments and programs with both divisional and college level critical initiatives and goals.
  • Work with DD and college to identify programs and required resources that will attract staff and faculty who are committed, passionate and contribute to our shared mission.
  • Analyze and provide recommendations that affect divisional resources and develop metrics for strategic projects in the division in close collaboration with the college budget office.
  • Partner with college HR in evaluating the organizational structure of departments, division of job responsibilities, individual contributors, and team effectiveness within the division.
  • Provide ad hoc administrative support.
Departmental Support
  • Meet with divisional program managers to facilitate open communication.
  • Fill the gap and help translate, between Dean’s Office subject matter experts and department leadership in order to provide centralized efficient knowledge transfer, strategic goal alignment, and communication.
  • Take a hands-on role in developing divisional staff: Identify development, training, and other resources to ensure department staff and leadership have tools to meet expectations. When appropriate, where there is a gap, create and provide training.
  • Connect department leadership with resources as needed.
  • Facilitate department-level training and onboarding support for departmental leadership (chairs and business managers); locate/recruit experts within the division for key processes that could be used as resources for training and support.
  • Lead and coordinate new business development and service delivery initiatives, such as course planning, with input from key partners and in partnership with Dean's Office subject matter experts.
  • Identify, provide and deploy emergency back up to departments in the event of business manager turnover.
  • Work in close collaboration with College HR to support staff recruitments in the division, participate in search committees for all divisional business manager positions.
Project Management
  • Proactively work with the DD to identify short and long term divisional projects that require significant management, analysis, or research to attain success.
  • Identify the best modalities for collaborative projects (committees, task forces, etc.) and the relevant team members to contribute.
  • Identify attainable and meaningful expectations, limitations and outcomes for the project. Determine project scope and metrics for success.
  • Work with key partners to identify resources (financial or otherwise) and ensure projects are supported to successfully meet timelines and goals.
  • Identify potential stop gates, pivot points, or other potential project changes with enough advance notice to realign the project if needed.
  • Engage in planning and implementing organizational change strategies when required.
What You Should Know

This position will work a hybrid format, with some in person and some remote work.

What We Can Offer

The annual salary is $75,000- $80,000. Relocation assistance is available.

What We Require
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute.
  • Three (3) years of experience providing professional-level operations or administrative support.

What We Would Like You To Have
  • 4+ years of providing professional-level operations or administrative support.
  • Experience working in a higher education environment or a large, complex organization.
  • Experience with organizational change, including managing and supporting process improvement initiatives.
  • Management/lead/supervisory experience.
