Job Title:  Writing Instructor

Classification:  Two-year, nine-month, benefits eligible, faculty position

Reports To:  Assistant Dean of Student Success

Job Summary/Objective: 

Sweet Briar College invites applications for a Writing Instructor to teach introductory expository writing for students and train and mentor student writing tutors as a part of our Academic Resource Center. The successful candidate will work closely with the Assistant Dean of Student Success, who directs our Academic Resource Center, to develop programs to support students at all points in their development and across academic disciplines.  A clear commitment to reflective teaching and creating positive and engaging learning experiences of writing for students in and outside of the classroom is desired. Candidates who are passionate about teaching and mentoring undergraduate students in a collaborative, collegial, and engaging academic environment are particularly encouraged to apply.

The expected teaching load will be two courses per semester.

Required Duties:

  • Work closely with the Assistant Dean of Student Success and the Academic Resource Center Manager to develop programs that support students’ writing development;
  • Provide one-on-one writing assistance and group facilitation through regularly scheduled and drop-in appointments;
  • Identify, evaluate, and recommend writing curricula and technologies for faculty;
  • Develop programs to help students strengthen writing and study skills;
  • Communicate with students, faculty, staff, and administrators about the writing support available through the Academic Resource Center; and
  • Promote student success and retention through the advocacy of writing and communication.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s in English, Rhetoric, and Composition, or related field;
  • Demonstrated experience teaching college-level writing courses;
  • Familiarity with writing center pedagogy;
  • Demonstrated experience teaching or tutoring multilingual and/or ESL students and students with learning differences;
  • A strong record of tutoring in relevant programs; and
  • Experience managing student tutors.

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in English, Rhetoric, and Composition, or related field.
