Summary:

Reporting to the W&J College President, the Senior Director of Communication & Marketing and oversees the Division of Communication & Marketing, which comprises a team responsible for brand management, advertising, public relations, internal communications, creative services, electronic communication website, social media, video production, sports information, conferences/events, community relations, merchandising, and other related functions. The Senior Director will be an accomplished leader of people with demonstrated experience in higher education and nonprofits environments, and in managing budgets, people, and processes.

To succeed, the Senior Director will be a collaborative leader and partner, capable of working across academic and administrative departments to execute integrated communication and marketing strategies to amplify the college brand and reputation among all stakeholders.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Direct the development of strategic communication plans for digital marketing; online strategy; college branding and integrated marketing and messaging campaigns; research, metrics and measurement; strategic projects; and creative/design.
  • Lead the development of key messages and strategies to communicate complex information to multiple audiences and constituencies through a wide variety of communications platforms, including digital, print, and media.
  • Work with the college President, vice presidents, Campus & Public Safety team, and others to develop crisis communications and direct responses as needed.
  • Build and enhance relationships with faculty members to promote faculty thought-leadership to external audiences and media outlets.
  • Provide strategic direction and partner with various departments on content marketing and communication initiatives.
  • Cultivate and leverage relationships with key journalists and other influencers to secure media opportunities and drive positive exposure for W&J College.
  • Partner with administrative departments to develop and execute content and creative assets that support enrollment efforts, student retention, fund raising, and alumni engagement.
  • Serve as a primary community relations liaison to Washington County and surrounding area as appropriate.
  • Actively coach, mentor and develop the communication and marketing team to increase the capabilities and effectiveness of this group, including setting clear performance management objectives.
  • Employ appropriate market research to inform work, better understand the college's audiences, and identify emerging marketing and reputation-building opportunities.
  • Produce and present bi-annual reports to the W&J College Board of Trustees on the progress and success of communication and marketing efforts.
  • Attend senior leadership meetings as needed and work with senior leadership team to advance projects and program that enhance W&J's reputation and position in the higher education market.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree Master's preferred, ideally in integrated marketing communications, public relations, or a similar area of study.
  • Minimum of 10+ years' experience in public relations, communications and/or marketing with proven experience in managing individuals and cross-functional teams. Preference will be given to candidates with significant higher education experience.
  • Experience in managing and maintaining social media platforms.
  • Proven experience in crisis communications and reputation management.
  • Comfortable managing multiple projects at a time with short or overlapping deadlines.
  • Skilled in negotiation and facilitation of teams, individuals and projects.
  • Excellent, versatile writing ability.
Supervisory Duties:

This position oversees the offices of Communication & Marketing, Events and Conferences, and the W&J Campus Store, and will have direct oversight of a number of departmental functions.
