CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

This position provides a wide rangeofinformation and services attheMorris Library Help Center.Connects users with print resources inthecollection and helps them navigate essential Library services. Supports safety and security activities forthecollection and Library users.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serve as Student assistant supervisor
  • Coordinate hiring, training and evaluation of student employees. Train students in circulation and reserve and branch library policies and procedures. Ensures that all changes to policies and procedures are communicated to student employees.
  • Prepare student employee payroll and maintains student budget for Help Center. Duties include approving online timesheets and preparing pay increase recommendations to the department head.
  • Maintain student assistant schedule, ensuring there are no gaps in desk coverage due to unplanned absences. Assign duties and manages the performance appraisal process for student assistants.
  • Provide services at the Help Center desk. Duties include: checking books, ILL, equipment, and film and video collection on-hold materials in and out; providing information services using electronic resources, including demonstrating basic search techniques in the Library catalog; interpreting policies and procedures for library users; assisting users with print release stations, printers, and scanners; assisting instructors and students with using course reserve services. Close the Help Center in the evenings.
  • Acts as primary contact for security and facility problems that occur on evenings or weekends. Facilitates the evacuation of the building during fire alarms and coordinates staff assembly procedures to identify Library employees who are known to have exited the building.
  • Prepare student lockers for reassignment and monitor the record system for assignment. Serve as backup for sending damaged items to the Digital Collections and Preservation Department for treatment; processing material fortheRecent Acquisitions Display; searching for, retrieving, or recalling items requested by users. Processes materials for course reserves.Other duties as assigned.



QUALIFICATIONS:

Required

  • High school diploma or GED and two to three years of related experience;
  • Working knowledge of library records, automated library systems and other specialized library databases, and procedures in specific library operations;
  • Ability to perform difficult bibliographic searches and to research challenging citations in a variety of library databases and the Internet;
  • Demonstrated ability to work with complex transactions and to perform detailed and accurate work while dealing with frequent interruptions;
  • Ability to follow complex instructions, to work independently and to devise solutions to problems;
  • Strong organizational skills;
  • Ability to communicate effectively and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds;
  • Experience using standard computer software programs for word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and Web-based applications.


Preferred:

  • Previous customer service experience.


Special Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift, with or without assistance, boxes of books and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds, push and pull full book carts weighing up to 250 pounds, and bend and reach to place books and journals on library shelves ranging from 3 to 90 inches high.



WORK HOURS: Sunday - Thursday, 2:30 -11:00 pm is the standard work week. Hours vary for winter and summer sessions and semester breaks.
