Research Administration Services (RAS) supports the research and scholarly activities of FAS and SEAS (the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences) faculty, through close collaboration and oversight of/with the research faculty, staff and students by providing administrative support for the lifecycle of sponsored research. This support includes, but is not limited to, pre- and post-award guidance, review, audit, and oversight of both financial and non-financial aspects of sponsored projects.

Position Description

The Sr. Director of Research Compliance for Research Administration Services is a curious, effective communicator with a thirst for knowledge, holistic considerations, and assured leadership skills. The ideal incumbent is also analytical and able to navigate a complex environment with a quickly changing landscape, often with competing priorities. At times with minimal guidance, and other times in partnership with executives and senior leaders from the Harvard community, s/he will assess and lead the development and implementation of an exemplary compliance program for the research community under RAS’ purview. S/he will have a lead role in the dissemination of federal, local government, university-wide, and sponsor-related guidelines including, the development, maintenance/revision of policies and procedures as needed and in anticipation of growth in the overall research landscape. S/he will represent RAS and the Associate Dean for Research Administration on a number of university-wide committees and represent Harvard at local and national meetings/conferences. This successful candidate is agile, sincerely appreciates the significance of diversity in research and academia, and is a forward thinker who is flexible in a hybrid environment.

Brief description of responsibilities:
  • Provide expert/seasoned guidance, dissemination, support, and/or training in the following areas of research compliance:
    • federal regulations and guidelines
    • state regulations and guidelines
    • sponsored terms and conditions
    • export control
    • international collaborations
    • conflicts of interest
    • legal obligations related to sponsored research
  • Management of compliance team (which includes):
    • Training/continued education
    • Mentoring
    • Career development
    • Team building
  • Develop processes/procedures related to research compliance for varying end-users (including but not limited to faculty, Sr. Leadership, students, administrators/staff)
  • Develop, maintain, oversee reporting and analysis related to compliance oversight
  • Provide support/guidance for:
    • internal audits
    • external audits
  • Participate on/lead various committees and task forces related to sponsored project compliance
  • Represent the department and university at various meetings/conferences both locally and nationally
