Job Summary

The Communications & Engagement Manager will serve as the communications lead for the Office of Undergraduate Education (OUE), which is responsible for the administration of the undergraduate curriculum at Harvard, working with academic departments and individual faculty to deliver a transformative educational experience for students. The Communications & Engagement Manager will coordinate, align, and implement a broad range of internal communications activities in support of affiliate offices of the OUE and its key audiences, including students, faculty, and staff.

The Communications & Engagement Manager will also coordinate with multiple stakeholders across Harvard College and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) to develop and implement key messages and other content that reflect the priorities of the OUE in alignment with the mission of Harvard College. This OUE communications leader will partner closely with the Harvard College Communications team to implement broad College communications strategies and tools, as well as to ensure alignment with the broader communications strategy of the College, and FAS. A successful candidate in this role will bring strategic thinking and a collaborative approach, including initiating positive and proactive relationships with both internal and external constituents.

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • 5+ years experience in communications, marketing or public relations, digital and multi-media.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Extensive experience with digital and print media, as well as developing and maintaining a relevant and interactive online presence.
Additional Qualifications and Skills
  • Experience creating and managing content in a scholarly environment preferred; appreciation and understanding of higher education and academic values required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of web technologies and experience maintaining web content management systems.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing comprehensive social media and digital distribution strategies across channels/platforms and managing an editorial process to maximize the impact of digital content.
  • Experience with Microsoft products (including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), and other web-based collaboration tools.
  • Strong analytical and technical skills, project management skills, and a high degree of initiative, motivation, flexibility and self-direction.
  • Impeccable attention to detail and experience with copyediting and fact- checking.
  • Familiarity with email client systems and basic graphic design experience.
  • Flexibility to work occasional extra hours, including evenings and weekends to meet deadlines and address urgent issues.

Position Description

Reporting to the OUE Associate Director of Administration, with a dotted line to the Director of Communications & Engagement for Harvard College, this person:
  • Leads in planning strategic communication outreach, promoting new technologies for teaching and learning, and planning other communication campaigns as needed to faculty, students, FAS leadership, deans, etc.
  • Works across offices within OUE, the College, and FAS as appropriate to implement integrated strategies for marketing programs, services, and initiatives to many and varied constituents.
  • Sets the tone for marketing and publicity and ensures messaging accurately represents OUE Dean?s goals in alignment with the College mission.
  • Works with partner offices and College Communications centrally to represent OUE, ensuring academic representation and consistency in messaging throughout the student journey.
  • Writes and edits high level and complex communications (digital content, website materials, emails, print documents for advertising) that promote OUE priorities in collaboration with partner offices across the University (e.g., Libraries, Admissions, academic departments, Office for the Arts, Title IX, etc.).
  • Partners with OUE colleagues to create content related to: Visitas, First-Year Orientation, Family Weekends, Concentration Declaration, Course Selection and Advising, etc., ensuring the full diversity of the College experience is communicated to students, faculty, families, and staff in a consistent, accessible, and clear manner.
  • In conjunction with College Communications, OUE Directors, and OUE Department Administrators, develops and maintains consistent messaging across the OUE: websites, emails, newsletters, events, social media, etc.
  • Responsible for the hands-on planning and execution of annual OUE communications content, as well as special initiatives for publicity campaigns and publications.
  • Uses up-to-date publishing technologies to create communication documents, including content management and marketing software.
  • Serves as a liaison with HUIT, Harvard Web Publishing (HWP), and other available resources to manage and monitor web development projects.
  • Identifies and manages external service providers, vendors, and freelance creative talent when appropriate.
  • Establishes OUE marketing and branding processes, procedures, and calendar.
  • Consults and advises OUE and its affiliate offices on their communications needs.
  • Ensures standardization among department print and digital channels, develops standards and provides direction to OUE affiliate offices.
  • Works with affiliate offices to ensure digital accessibility guidelines are met and that staff are supported with training and resources.
  • Develops common taxonomies and vocabularies, to be shared across units, and advocates for the use of Harvard identity guidelines throughout academic content.
  • Reports on publicity metrics, analyzes trends, and updates Deans and Directors on effectiveness of marketing strategies.
  • Utilizes data to improve upon communication efforts.
  • Incorporates user experience and user-centered design methods, including content inventories, gap analyses, user research, and usability testing/experience.
