Additional Qualifications and Skills

Master's degree preferred. Experience in resource allocation, process oversight, and complex policy interpretation and enforcement required. Must be both detail- and big-picture-oriented. Excellent communication skills and experience communicating with different constituencies required. Must be capable of working with, combining, and interpreting qualitative and quantitative datasets. Experience managing IT projects and process improvements a plus. Teaching and pedagogy experience preferred.

Working Conditions

This position will be based in Cambridge, MA. All remote work must be performed in a state in which Harvard is registered to do business (CA, CT, MA, MD, ME, NH, NY, RI, and VT). Human Resources Consulting is currently developing hybrid workplace models which actively support some remote work (within a state in which Harvard is registered to do business) where business and team needs allow. Furthermore, individual flexible and remote work options for this role will be discussed during the interview process.

Position Description

The Director of Instructional Support oversees the day-to-day operations of the Teaching Fellow/Teaching Assistant allocation and appointment process in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Approximately 1500 TF/TA appointments are processed each academic term, based on per-course allocations negotiated between academic departments and Instructional Support Office. Appointments are created and submitted by departmental staff before review by staff in the Instructional Support Office. Besides these processes, the Director will also oversee other Instructional Support projects, such as Classroom to Table, the Detur Prize, and the Faculty Teaching Awards.

Specific responsibilities include:
  • TA/TF allocations: TA/TF assistance is allocated on a course-by-course basis across the FAS. Departments submit initial requests based on historical information and submit new requests as enrollments are finalized. This position oversees the process of reviewing and approving departmental requests, makes decisions on exceptions, and communicates with departments. Implements policies and priorities defined by the Associate Dean.
  • TA/TF appointments: Approximately 1500 TAs and TFs are appointed in FAS each term. The Director of Instructional Support oversees the process of reviewing and approving those appointments, managing staff who handle day-to-day reviews and approvals and making decisions on exceptions. They serve as liaison with OLER, GSAS, Aurora, and other policy and process stakeholders. Implement and enforce TA/TF appointment policies, included HGSU policies.
  • Instructional Support Reporting and Process Improvement: The Director of Instructional Support collects and analyzes data regarding the usage of TAs and TFs across FAS. They will regularly report back to the Associate Deans on TA/TF usage across divisions and departments, noting important trends and changes as well as any areas of concern. They will bring those areas to the attention of the Associate Dean and research and propose possible solutions. Specifically, they will find opportunities to make policies and processes more efficient, effective, and consistent.
  • Instructional Support Budgeting: The Director of Instructional Support oversees the creation and submission of the annual $35M instructional support budget and serves as a liaison with FAS Finance and with departments on budget issues.
  • Classroom to Table: Classroom to Table (C2T) is a program that encourages informal contact between students and faculty outside of the classroom by making it possible for students and faculty to dine together. The Director of Instructional Support oversees the administrative aspects of C2T. They manage the staff who do logistical work, liaise with restaurants and HUIT, and make decisions on C2T practices based on policies set y Associate Dean.
  • Detur Prize: The Detur Prize is a book award for Harvard undergraduates based on outstanding pre-concentration academic achievement. This position oversees the Detur Prize administration and distribution. They manage staff who arrange book purchases, engraving, and ceremony. Liaise with FAS Registrar?s Office and Charity of Edward Hopkins.
