Harold Washington College is currently seeking a candidate for a full-time, tenure-track teaching position in the Humanities & Music department. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated success in the classroom by developing and using effective teaching strategies that meet students’ diverse needs and engage the students in active skill-building related to analysis, evaluation, argumentation, appreciation, and performance, along with critical reading and writing, specifically in disciplines of the Humanities and Performing Arts. We are particularly in search of candidates with academic backgrounds in Dance and/or Music. Additional areas of interest include expertise in Popular Culture, Media, Race and Ethnicity, and/or Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Design courses to meet learning outcomes, and promote students’ active participation in their own learning.
  • Create an effective learning environment that fosters students’ intellectual curiosity and growth.
  • Employ a variety of formative and summative assessments to ensure that classroom instruction leads to student learning and the attainment of the student learning outcomes for the course.
  • Help students reach their academic, personal and career goals and foster a safe environment that respects the diversity of people and ideas by modeling respect for all students and conveying confidence in every student’s ability to learn.
  • Contribute to and provide leadership for the department, and particularly the Dance Program, in academic and professional communities, and promote collaboration and teamwork among members of these communities.
  • Participate in the planning and execution of performance related events and co-curricular activities
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Minimally, Master’s Degree in Humanities or Dance or Music or Interdisciplinary Studies with 18 graduate hours in arts-related courses (minimum), or MFA in Dance with 18+ graduate hours in arts-related appreciation or history courses.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office software and Brightspace, preferred
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to communicate with diverse group of staff and students required
  • Experience with a diverse, multilingual student population is desired, as is a commitment to the open access mission of the college.
