Senior Advancement Writer

 

USC Health Sciences Advancement is seeking an experienced Senior Advancement  Donor Relations Writer to support the writing needs of the Vice President for Health Sciences Advancement and the Sr. Associate Vice President Campaign Initiatives for their campaign, fundraising, advancement and stewardship efforts and goals. Writing projects will include highly personalized communications for donors and USC leadership, campaign white papers; case statements for campaign priorities; proposals for individual donors; foundations; and corporations; personalized communications for donors and USC leadership, and other materials as needed. This position reports to the Director, HSC Advancement Administrative Operations, and is part of a highly collaborative team charged with supporting the fundraising goals of the USC academic medical enterprise.  implementing the Keck Medicine of USC’s communications strategies across print and digital media. The Senior Advancement Donor Relations Writer will interface with colleagues across USC Health Sciences Advancement, Keck Medicine of USC faculty, clinicians, researchers, and staff, as well as USC’s central communications team.

 

Essential job duties include, but are not limited to: 

The Senior Advancement Donor Relations Writer will create content that is compelling and persuasive, adopting appropriate writing styles for an array of constituencies and goals that support strategies set by the Vice President and Sr. Associate Vice President to advance the fundraising goals of the USC Health Sciences Campus. The Senior Advancement Writer must be able to effectively adopt the “voice” of the leadership team, be an efficient collaborator with excellent communication skills and the desire to contribute to a positive, innovative culture within the context of a fun, fast-paced environment. The Senior Advancement Donor Relations Writer will share their own perspectives, learn from the perspectives of others, and contribute to a culture of diversity and inclusiveness.

 

Job Duties:

• Develop content for communications that help the university secure philanthropic gifts.

• Research and write engaging, accurate and persuasive copy that speaks to targeted, key University constituencies, including compelling and creative narratives that communicate the impact of philanthropy at Keck Medicine of USC.

• Develop and write comprehensive, strategic pieces to effectively promote Keck Medicine’s fundraising initiatives, including those that are customized to individual constituents.

• In conjunction with the Vice President of Health Sciences Advancement, the Sr. Associate Vice President for Campaign Initiatives, and the Associate Vice President of Strategy and Operations, conceptualize, research, write and edit gift proposals for individual, principal,  and transformational donors, as well as case statements, concept papers, donor correspondence, fundraising collateral, and stewardship communications.

• Cultivate sources and identify content to meet strategic advancement communications needs.

• Interview and communicate with key University stakeholders, including major donors and University leadership.

• Work closely with communications colleagues across the university and health system to produce compelling, error-free pieces that advance development strategies and align with USC brand guidelines. and existing templates.

• Work closely with University Keck Advancement Communications team on impact reporting for initiatives, milestones, and individual donors and funds as needed.

• Contribute to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures and backgrounds.

• Re-write edit and proofread documents from others as requested.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

• 10+ years of related experience. Relevant education or related experience as substitute. Experience in a complex medical or academic development setting is encouraged.

• Strong understanding of the issues, nuances and needs of an academic medical enterprise.

• Experience writing for senior leadership including highly customized emails, letters, speaking points, speeches, and proposals

• Familiarity with philanthropy and major gift fundraising processes

• Excellent written and verbal skills

• Excellent organizational skills

• Sound judgment and decision making

• A cooperative and team-oriented attitude

• Diplomacy: ability to cultivate and maintain relationships

• Effective facilitator in various settings

• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines

Minimum Education: Bachelor's degree, Combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education

Minimum Experience: 5 years, Combined education/experience as substitute for minimum experience

Minimum Field of Expertise: Editing, publication management, journalism, or related field experience.  Thorough knowledge of publications standards and techniques, design, printing, graphics, desktop publishing, word processing and photography.  Ability to write and edit effectively at an advanced level.
