BASIC FUNCTION:
Moreno Valley College is seeking an Assistant Professor, Community Interpretation in Spanish. The successful candidate will share Moreno Valley College's and the Department of Communications, English, & World Languages' commitment to educating its racially/ethnically and socioeconomically diverse student population. Moreno Valley College has approximately 15,000 students, of whom 63% are Hispanic and 12% African American. Moreno Valley College has been designated a Hispanic-Serving Institution, reflecting the great responsibility that the College has to the educational attainment and economic well-being of the surrounding community.

The successful candidates will be expected to teach courses in courtroom interpreting, medical interpreting, business interpreting, as well as introductory courses in translation. In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to work with an advisory committee for the Community Interpretation Program, to foster the growth of the program, and to develop strategies that facilitate equitable retention and success of a diverse student population.

Education:
EDUCATION:
Certificate or degree (Associates, Bachelors or Master's) in interpretation/translation is desired.
AND state or federal certification in courtroom interpreting is required.

All degrees and units used to satisfy minimum qualifications shall be from accredited institutions.

Experience:
EXPERIENCE: Professional experience in courtroom interpreting or medical interpreting is required.

State or Federal Certification in courtroom interpreting is required.

Two years' experience working as a certified interpreter is required.

· Native or near-native fluency in Spanish and in English is required.

· Experience coordinating applied linguistics/cultural field observation opportunities at the courts and hospitals for Career and Technical Education programs is desired.

· Knowledge and experience of current theories in language acquisition and modern language teaching methodologies is desired.

· Knowledge and experience with technology in the context of interpretation, translation, and world language instruction is desired.

EXPERIENCE:
-Professional experience in courtroom interpreting or medical interpreting is required.

-State or Federal Certification in courtroom interpreting is required.

-Two years' experience working as a certified courtroom interpreter is required.

· Native or near-native fluency in Spanish and in English is required.

We are looking for candidates who have recent experience working with African American, Latinx/Hispanic, Native American, and other racially/ ethnically, socioeconomically minoritized students in the classroom; who have an understanding of how historical patterns have shaped these groups' experiences and representation within higher education, especially how real or perceived exclusion can shape patterns of participation and outcomes; who demonstrate a willingness to examine and adapt their instructional, relational, and classroom practices to engage and support more effectively various groups of marginalized students; who have experience and skill addressing issues of equity in the classroom; who embrace culturally sustaining teaching practices and policies to engage our minoritized student population; who demonstrate ability to address equity gaps through instructional strategies and policies; and who demonstrate knowledge of the implications of addressing equity gaps in higher education.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the Community Interpretation Program; will create and develop curriculum for the Community Interpretation Program; will work well with others (students, faculty, staff, and administrators); and will fulfill the duties of a fulltime faculty member in a shared governance environment.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:
State and/or Federal Court Interpreter Certification is required.

Current Memberships in one or more of the following is desired: American Translators Association (ATA), California Court Interpreters Association (CCIA), National Association of Judiciary Interpreters and Translators (NAJIT).

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. The instructional assignment will include lecture and laboratory classes in the CMI discipline.

2. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to teach CMI courses in various platforms (face-to-face, hybrid, and online) as needed.

3. The position requires the successful candidate to meet regularly with an Advisory Committee to grow and eventually maintain the program to support area interpreting needs in various fields.

4. All faculty are required to participate in outcomes assessment work and program review.

5. Faculty assignments are based upon the assumption of workload of forty hours weekly (42.5 in the compressed calendar), including but not limited to conducting classes, class preparation, student evaluation, office hours, committee work, curriculum and program development, student learning outcomes assessment, program review, student activities, and other duties per the collective bargaining agreement.

6. Institutional service activities are required of all faculty members.

7. Participation in discipline/department decision making processes and work regarding curriculum, program development, Improvement of Instruction, and other professional matters are also expected of all department faculty.

8. Responsibilities also include maintaining standards of professional conduct and ethics appropriate to the professional position.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
1. Ten-month, tenure-track position.
2. Salary is commensurate with academic preparation, and full-time teaching or equivalent experience with a range from Column C, Step 1 to Column H, Step 6 of the current Faculty Salary Schedule.
3. Medical and dental benefits are provided for the employee and legal dependents.
4. A $50,000 life insurance policy is provided for the employee.
5. Orientation to college is required as is adherence to Improvement of Instruction policy.
6. Maintaining broad knowledge of academic or occupational area and design pedagogy related to learning outcomes is expected.
7. Responsible for all other conditions of employment required of full-time faculty members such as a willingness to be involved in District promotional activities, active participation in college committee work, student activities and other support services, and appropriate professional activities.
