Experiential Education Manager - Outdoor Adventure Center

Summary:
The department of Recreation & Wellness provides opportunities for Utah Valley University students, faculty, and staff to participate in a wide variety of recreational & wellness pursuits. Recreation & Wellness is a department within Student Affairs.
  • The Experiential Education Manager will educate the Adventure Trip Leaders (ATLs) in all aspects of planning excursions and administering High Impact backcountry experiences for the UVU community.
  • Supervise, advise, and implement day and multi-day outdoor adventure learning excursions.
  • Develop and coordinate student training to ensure safety through proper decision making, critical thinking, group management and development, risk management, and certifications.
  • Assess and evaluate ATLs skills. Establish, formulate, and conduct marketing, social media, and program website.

Required Qualifications:
Three years of experience leading groups in an outdoor setting. Current Basic First Aid and CPR Certifications, Wilderness First Responder, Safe Driver Training (will provide within 3 months of hire) Graduation from and accredited Institution in Recreation or a related field of study. Two years experience supervising. Experience in writing budgets and operating procedures.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of various outdoor activities; climbing, canyoneering, mountain biking, skiing, snowboarding, white water rafting and kayaking, backpacking, and camping.
  • Technical knowledge with outdoor equipment use, maintenance, repair, and care.
  • Experience with Expedition Behavior, Group Development, Outdoor Leadership and Leave No Trace.
  • Educated in current Industry Standards and Rubric.
  • Three years of experience teaching and leading in an outdoor setting.
  • Effective verbal and written skills.
  • Decision-making skills.
  • Maintain a professional presence and provide superior customer service.
  • Facilitate academic and non-academic, experiential group experiences in the outdoors.
  • Strong leadership and organizational skills. Supervisory skills.
  • Ability to manage budgets.
  • Ability to lift heavy equipment.
  • Work independently and creatively with minimal supervision.
  • Work in a fast-paced, chaotic environment.
  • Work with diverse age groups and demographics.
  • Ability to work with students, staff, and faculty and communicate clearly.
  • Ability to maintain a professional manner and be an example to trip leaders and participants.

Physical Requirements:
Physical ability to train in various fitness formats and work in a general office environment.

Pay Range: $36,577 - $48,831
