Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The Division for University Advancement is responsible for the following primary goals:

1) Coordinate a campus-wide, comprehensive effort to raise philanthropic funds that support the strategic plan and mission of the university.

2) Manage an inclusive alumni engagement program designed to serve and engage nearly 100,000 alumni as ambassadors, advocates and donors.

3) Strengthen and expand UNCW’s donor pipeline through effective discovery, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies.

4) Ensure that external boards ( UNCW Foundation Board, Board of Visitors, Student Aid Association Board, Alumni Association Board of Directors and the Friends of UNCW ) are effective in their mission of supporting UNCW .

The division’s fundraising efforts are enhanced by effective partnerships with the campus community as well as external constituents including alumni, parents, corporations, foundations, volunteers and friends. Development areas include annual giving, leadership annual giving, major gifts, principal gifts, corporate and foundation engagement and planned giving, as well as alumni engagement. Prospect development, events and board management, stewardship, communications and advancement services are support services for the fundraising activities of the division.

Brief Summary of Work for this Position

Reporting to the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Development Operations, under the leadership of the Vice Chancellor for University Advancement, the primary responsibility of the Prospect Development Manager is to manage the Prospect Development program and its staff in order to assist the unit in its mission.

This position is responsible for the following duties:
• Coordinating the department’s workload and assigning tasks to direct reports as appropriate.
• Participating in ongoing performance evaluation and providing professional development opportunities for direct reports.
• Managing prospect assignments and acting in a consulting role with development staff to help them manage their portfolios.
• Developing and managing proposal and prospect tracking processes and procedures to assist development staff in managing their portfolios and recording their development activity.
• Developing queries, exports, and custom reports in partnership with Advancement Services to assist development staff and division leadership with the identification of prospects and evaluation of development productivity.
• Carrying out research on prospects for development staff, senior faculty and administrators in advance of calls and events in order to obtain optimal outcomes.
• Identifying and implementing strategies for identifying new potential prospects for the Annual Leadership Gifts, Major Gifts, and Planned Gifts development programs.
• Participating in the upkeep of the constituent records in The Raiser’s Edge – particularly the Prospect module -by collecting and updating information on individuals, corporations and foundations.
• Identifying, acquiring, and regularly evaluating subscriptions to relevant databases and services to ensure that prospect research can be carried out at a level necessary to meet the needs of the division while remaining cost-effective.
• Collaborating with representatives of other departments within the division to identify common goals and new opportunities, and eliminate duplication of effort.
• Providing training opportunities on prospect management and research policies and procedures and the Prospect Module of The Raiser’s Edge for new and existing development and prospect development staff.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree and one year of experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Preferred education, professional skills and experience

• Master’s degree
• Basic programming and statistics experience
• Experience with Raiser’s Edge and non-profit fundraising
• Fundamental understanding of management and leadership
