In accordance with its mission as a community college, instruction at LAVC focuses on creating pathways for certificates, degrees, and transfer.  Faculty members at LAVC are expected to create a learning-centered environment that supports students in fulfilling their educational goals.  LAVC invites applications for the position of a full-time tenure track Business/Finance Instructor. The ideal candidate is a dynamic instructor with the ability to teach finance and business courses.  The assignment involves curriculum development and evaluation, on-line course development, attendance of department and discipline meetings, professional activities, and college committee work. Instruction may include day, evening, online, off-campus, dual enrollment, and Saturday courses.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in business, business management, business administration, accountancy, finance, marketing, or business education; OR
  • Bachelor’s in any of the above AND Master’s in economics, personnel management, public administration, or J.D. or LL.B. degree; OR
  • Bachelor’s in economics with a business emphasis AND Master’s degree in personnel management, public administration, or J.D. or LL.B. degree; OR the equivalent.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

 

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENT COVID 19 VACCINATION:

Pursuant to LACCD Board of Trustee's Policy 2900, all students and employees must be fully vaccinated and complete a baseline test or have an approved exemption.  LACCD employees are required to provide their vaccination status in compliance with the LACCD Board of Trustees’ policy.  Newly hired employees will be required to provide their vaccination status prior to starting a position or, at the latest, by their position start date.

 

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • Specialization in finance with at least three years’ experience in the finance and banking industry.
  • Experience, ability, and enthusiasm to teach courses in Finance and Business Administration, including, Personal Finance, Investments, Introduction to Business, Business Computations, Entrepreneurship, Principles of Management, and other classes as needed.
  • At least two years’ experience teaching Finance to students at a community college or university level.
  • Experience in the development and assessment of student learning outcomes.
  • Demonstrated use of learning management systems; Canvas is preferred.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, cultural, socioeconomic, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
  • Ability to communicate professionally with students, classified staff, faculty, stakeholders, industry partners and administration.
  • Initiative and ability to develop new courses/programs and market current programs to the community as well as business and industry.
  • Ability to communicate professionally and work collegially within the department
  • Grant writing experience.
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm and interest in working collaboratively with colleagues of multiple departments and in serving on college committees in a shared governance organization.
  • Evidence of professional leadership in finance education.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide leadership to the finance discipline leading to program growth and improving student success and retention.
  • Teach a full range of business courses in finance and across various disciplines.
  •  Maintain scheduled office hours for student contact.
  • Develop new courses/certificates/degrees and participate in general curriculum development.
  • Actively recruit business advisors for our advisory committee and participate in periodic advisory committee meetings that provide input to align programs and pathways with industry needs.
  • Participate in the development and assessment of student learning and program outcomes, as well as, in the program review process.
  • Participate and actively contribute to departmental meetings.
  • Participate and actively contribute to college committees.
  • Participate in initiatives related to curriculum development/enhancements, program planning/implementation, and student recruitment/retention.
  • Develop partnerships with businesses and organizations locally, nationally, and internationally that will enhance the department’s ability to deliver education.
  • Develop educational and/or informational activities/seminars for students, faculty, staff and the business community.
  • Provide academic and career advising to traditional and non-traditional students
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to maintain expertise and infuse new approaches and instructional methodologies into course offerings.
  • Maintain professional and ethical academic standards.
  • Commitment to the mission of the community college and its philosophy of education.
  • Assume departmental duties as assigned by the chairperson.
