Position Summary Information

Job Description Summary

Auburn University seeks a non-tenure track faculty administrator to serve as Assistant Director of University Writing. This is a continuing, 12-month, non-tenure-track faculty position with benefits and a salary commensurate with experience and qualifications. The Assistant Director will be a member of University Writing’s administrative team reporting to the Director.

University Writing was established in 2010 under the Office of the Provost to coordinate the university-wide initiative to improve writing and writing instruction at Auburn. Programs and services include writing-focused faculty development, the Miller Writing Center ( MWC ), and WE Write, a new writing-enriched (WE) curriculum project.

Auburn University enrolls more than 6,000 graduate students from nearly 90 different countries. We seek an individual with experience supporting graduate students who come from diverse disciplinary, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds. Candidates should be able to contribute to a key value and outcome in University Writing: creating a welcoming learning and working environment.

The Assistant Director will have three major responsibilities: (1) supervising University Writing’s graduate assistants (GAs), (2) directing our graduate student programs, and (3) managing assorted projects.

The Assistant Director will supervise six or more graduate assistants, with duties including recruiting, hiring, training, observing, evaluating, and developing personalized support for each direct report. The AD will be responsible for ensuring their supervisees fulfill a variety of consequential assignments, including facilitating writing workshops for audiences across the university, managing the ePortfolio webpage and award process, and training Miller Writing Center staff to deliver introductory presentations. In addition to overseeing the performance of their supervisees, the AD should mentor them, providing them with opportunities to participate in research, conferences, and publications.

The Assistant Director will also oversee University Writing’s graduate student programs, which currently include WriteFest, a workshop series for graduate students; the Graduate Writing and Research Studio, a collaboration with the University Libraries; Graduate Writing Groups; and Graduate Writing Partners. Each of these programs requires a variety of logistical and curricular preparations, such as marketing, recruiting participants, communicating with students and faculty, and providing regular professional development for graduate student workers. For all graduate programs, the Assistant Director should, in collaboration with the administrative team, analyze assessment data and generate appropriate reports; set priorities for expanded services; work with campus partners; and monitor the support provided to students across modalities.

The Assistant Director will manage other projects, such as coordinating University Writing’s in-class workshops and presentations, including corresponding with faculty requestors; delivering graduate-level workshops across campus; and collaborating with the Human Resource Development program to provide professional writing workshops to Auburn employees.

We expect the individual in this position to be involved in and able to represent Auburn’s writing program at regional and national conferences and to have a demonstrated professional interest in the larger conversations about writing center pedagogy and administration.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications include: excellent spoken and written communication skills; a Master’s degree in English, Rhetoric, Writing, or a closely related field at the time of employment; and experience in teaching and tutoring graduate writers, as well as in designing and assessing graduate-level writing support services. Additional experience and interest in Writing in the Disciplines, writing and mindfulness, ePortfolios, or assessment are advantageous.

Starting date in mid-July 2022 is desired. The successful candidate will work in University Writing’s offices in Ralph Brown Draughon Library and hold frequent face-to-face meetings and programs. The candidate selected for this position must be able to meet eligibility requirements to work in the United States at the time the appointment is scheduled to begin and continue working legally for the proposed term of employment.
