    PRINCIPAL PURPOSE OF JOB: The Science and Technology Editor will provide writing and editing support in the Kentucky State University Land Grant Program and College of Agriculture, Community, and the Sciences.

    SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY: The Science and Technology Editor will edit and revise documents in the development of grant proposals, scientific journal articles, graduate student theses, Extension publications, state and federal reports for a range of agencies. This position will work with faculty, staff, and students in the areas of research, Extension, and teaching mainly in the areas of agriculture, human health and food safety, and science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) areas and have an understanding of common scientific terms in these areas. The candidate must have a thorough knowledge of grammar, usage, and spelling and be able to communicate with personnel from a range of scientific disciplines. This position will serve as a resource to other staff as needed in matters of grammar and usage. Will serve as instructor for agriculture communications or writing courses within the bachelor of science in Agriculture, Food, and Environment program and mentor practicum students.

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: (ex: duties that are essential to performing the job with or without an accommodation)

    1. Review and edits grant proposals, scientific journal articles, scientific presentations, graduate student theses, curricula, state and federal reports for a range of agencies.

    2. Ensures materials are grammatically correct, properly formatted, correctly punctuated, correctly spelled, clearly written, and stylistically appropriate for their intended audience.

    3. Serve as a resource to other staff as needed in matters of grammar and usage.

    4. Have the ability to efficiently and accurately meet deadlines.

    5. Understand multiple grant proposal and manuscript style and format requirements and keep up with any changes.

    6. Review manuscripts and provide feedback to authors, listing areas that need revisions and supplying instructions on how revisions should be made.

    7. Review the references and correct formatting, style, and coding.

    8. Review all accepted manuscripts, including references, figures, and tables, for a list of grammatical and style points.

    9. Provide instructions for how to revise all parts of the manuscript to conform to journal style.

    10. Serve as instructor for agriculture communications or writing courses within the bachelor of science in Agriculture, Food, and Environment program and mentor practicum students.

    11. Hold student writing boot camps and other workshops to enhance the quality of all written materials in the College.

    12. Keep a database of all publications reviewed, issuing of Agricultural Experiment numbers, and articles published.

    13. Perform other duties as assigned.

    OTHER DUTIES: The position will conduct other duties as required.

    QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s degree in Technical Writing, Agricultural Communications, Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or Marketing or related area. Five years of experience in developing publications, writing content, and layout/design for newsletters, news releases, and websites.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:

    • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies within the university and industry setting.

    • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

    • Ability to work in a team setting and work independently with limited supervision.

    • Ability to work under deadline.

    • Proficiency in computer software for desktop publishing including Adobe Creative Suite and others.

    • Valid driver’s license.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    • Work could involve some exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.

    • Requires some standing or walking.

    • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.

    • Some travel required.
