The University of Montana invites applications for a Sustainability Engagement Coordinator to join their team. The Sustainability Engagement Coordinator reports to the ASUM Transportation Director and the UM Sustainability Director. This position is responsible for managing the design, implementation, and evaluation of campus wide education, outreach, and engagement strategies to increase the practice of sustainable behaviors, increase awareness of UM’s sustainability initiatives, and foster a culture of sustainability at UM. This position oversees the engagement, communication, and education efforts for both the ASUM Office of Transportation and the Office of Sustainability.

The Engagement Coordinator develops and oversees student and employee education and behavior change programs such as the Eco Rep program, the Sustainable Transportation Ambassador program, and the Green Office Program. They develop and implement creative and effective trainings, resources, campaigns, and events to foster a campus wide culture of sustainability. This individual also collaborates with diverse campus groups to educate and train their members, provide strategic guidance on the development and implementation of sustainability initiatives and programs, and advance university-wide projects and goals. Finally, this position is responsible for the oversight of the Kless Sustainability Fund, the student fee-funded revolving loan and grant program that supports campus sustainability projects.

Specific duties also include:
  • Support the maintenance and content development for the sustainability and ASUMT websites
  • Manage social media for ASUMT and the Office of Sustainability
  • Participate in the planning and implementation of campus transportation and sustainability events such as the Commuter Challenge, Earth Week activities, Sustainability Month, and Campus Thrift
  • Possible supervision of student interns and employees
  • This position will occasionally be expected to work on weekends and/or during evening hours
This position provides the opportunity to develop leadership skills and relationships within a diverse and passionate campus community. Incumbent will also deepen their knowledge of sustainability issues and higher education sustainability work specifically. Given the role’s work with the revolving energy loan fund, the incumbent will also learn accounting and financial management skills, including best practices in revolving fund management. Supervisory skills are also a potential growth opportunity, along with improved public speaking skills, communications with diverse stakeholders, and a greater understanding of UM and MUS policies, practices, and culture

Required Skills
  • Fluent knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Zoom, and social media platforms
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills and experience leading in-person training programs. Meeting facilitation skills and experience.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem solving skills
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects with competing deadlines while maintaining attention to detail
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Demonstrated interest in and knowledge of environmental sustainability issues, energy conservation, zero waste strategies, climate change, behavior change strategies, etc.
  • Resilient personality with a high degree of flexibility, adaptability, and ability to respond to emerging opportunities in a higher education environment
  • Well organized and detail-oriented

Minimum Required Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • One to three (1-3) years of experience in community engagement campaigns, communications strategies, and/or campus sustainability
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience designing an engagement program with clearly identified outcomes and strategies, key performance indicators, and assessment tools
  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental studies or science, communications, journalism/English, marketing or related field
  • Ability to gauge program effectiveness from community feedback and implement improvements to processes or curricula as needed
  • Experience with education and/or behavior change campaigns, particularly those centered around sustainability, environmental, and social justice topics
  • Experience with web content management tools (like Cascade), blogs, newsletter engines, web-based collaboration tools (like Box), and online training platforms
  • Experience supervising student employees and interns and a desire to further develop supervisory skills
  • Event coordination experience
  • Graphic design experience (including experience with Canva)
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs

The Sustainability Engagement Coordinator reports to both the ASUM Transportation Director and the UM Sustainability Director. This is meant to connect the role to both the UM administration and to student government.

Position Details

Position Title: Sustainability Coordinator

Department: ASUM

Work Schedule: Full-time, 1.0 FTE (40 Hours a week), Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Position will occasionally need to work outside of the normal 8am-5pm window, 12 months/year

Salary: $20.363/hrCurrent employee’s rate of pay for this position will be determined by the staff compensation plan and will minimally be this posted salary. For questions and details regarding the staff compensation plan, email the Compensation Department .

Probationary Period: Six months minimum
