Academic Advisor I LGBTQIA Specialist

Summary:
Multicultural Student Services strives to teach and provide intentional programs and services that embrace and validate multicultural education, promote opportunities for intercultural learning, exchange, and appreciation and cultivates an atmosphere of inclusion, diversity, equity, and social change.

This role advises new, prospective, transfer, and continuing LGBTQIA+ and Multicultural students to develop, pursue, and achieve their academic goals while assisting them towards graduation. Emphasis is placed on striving to meet LGBTQIA+ and Multicultural student's needs, specifically in regards, but not limited to, culture, ethnicity/race, and gender identity/gender expression needs. Required Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited institution with a bachelor’s degree plus one year of experience related to Summary of Duties totaling five years.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of equity and accessibility components facing the LGBTQIA+ and Multicultural student community.
  • Knowledge of student development and the ability to assist students in developing effective academic plans and career and life goals, in order to promote student retention and academic success.
  • Knowledge of financial aid policies, procedures, and eligibility requirements.
  • Knowledge of student advising and techniques including content, curriculum, and graduation requirements and the ability to anticipate departmental and student needs.
  • Skills in community building and social/emotional support.
  • Skills in resource referral both across campus and within the general community.
  • Skills in the use of microcomputers, computer terminals, and academic and office software platforms (BANNER) as applied to management of student records, report preparation, and related activities.
  • Ability to creatively and independently problem-solve by prioritizing and multitasking while under pressure.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in written format in English. Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to collaborate with various entities inside and outside of the department.


Preferred Qualifications:
Discipline-specific educational background or experience. Advising experience within a higher education setting. Spanish proficiency is a plus.

Physical Requirements:
  • Sitting; particularly for extending periods of time.
  • Grasping; applying pressure to an object with the finger or palm.
  • Hearing; perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking level with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication and to make the discriminations in sound.
  • Seeing; required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and reports; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive inspection involving small defects, small parts, operations of machines (including inspection) or to make general observations facilities or structure (i.e. security guard, inspectors, etc.); using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication parts at distance close to eye.
  • Travel; requires a current Driver’s Licenses.Lifting; raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. Up to 10 pounds
  • Talking; expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Those activities in which they must be convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly or quickly.

Pay Range: $35,568 - $44,460
