Director of Pre-Med & Pre-Health Advising
About the Opportunity
The Director of Pre-Med & Pre-Health Advising leads university-wide efforts in advising current students and alumni pursuing a professional education in medicine (allopathic and osteopathic), physician assistant, dentistry, optometry, podiatric medicine, veterinary medicine, and as physician assistants, among other pre-med/pre-health fields. The Director will be responsible for the strategic development, implementation, and evaluation of a Pre-Med/Pre-Health advising program that supports student success and positions students as distinguished applicants for admission to professional schools. This is an opportunity to influence the academic and experiential learning opportunities that students experience, which will allow them to successfully transition into professional programs.
This person will provide executive level leadership, vision, and direction to the Pre-Med/Pre-Health Advising Program, will collaborate with academic and administrative departments throughout the University, and with an external committee of professionals in the medical and health sciences. The Director will increase the visibility of the Northeastern's profile and expand affiliations with medical schools. The Director will manage committee of medical and health professionals that will be incorporated in the programming, mentoring, and advising of the program. The Director will contribute to the University's recruitment and retention of high talent students by identifying and developing new student support and experiential learning opportunities.
This position reports to the Associate Vice Chancellor of Teaching and Learning. Work requires occasional evenings and weekends. The Northeastern Pre-Med/Pre-Health Advising Program assists students as they navigate professional program requirements and pursue experiences relevant to their career goals. The Director and program staff recruit students into the advising program; develop and implement a series of workshops, presentations, and special events; maintain a website which provides access to on-line resources, a calendar of events, advise/mentor students in their application processes/packets and more; provide advising services to students and opportunities for networking among students and Northeastern graduates who are current medical and healthcare students and professionals; build and leverage networks to secure experiential learning opportunities for students.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master's degree required, PhD or MD (or other clinical
background) preferred.
- An experienced leader in the medical sciences with 6 to 8 years
of progressive experience in leadership, management, and
supervision of a team.
- Must have extensive knowledge of pre-med and pre-health
advising and the medical school admissions process.
- Previous experience in achieving successful outcomes in
measures such as increased acceptance rates to medical schools or
building partnership agreements with other institutions.
- Ability to analyze data and identify patterns and trends;
ability to implement actions and identify outcomes based on
data.
- Individual must work well in a fast-paced environment and have
excellent time-management skills.
- Strong presentation, verbal, and written communication
skills.
- Must have the ability to work well with diverse groups of
people and have excellent interpersonal skills.
- An entrepreneurial spirit is strongly encouraged.
- The ability to be innovative and execute responsibilities
without supervision.
- Individual must be able to work as an integral member of a
team, demonstrate leadership qualities and have the skills and
knowledge to manage a project.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative
working relationships is essential to the position.
- Ability to build connections and networks to increase
experiential learning opportunities for our students.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Strategic Planning and Implementation:
- Develop and implement model for signature pre-med/pre-health
advising program
- Create system of assessment and outcome measures
- Increase visibility of Northeastern's profile to medical
schools
- Build affiliations with strategically identified medical
schools
- Collaborate with internal university partners
- Collaborate with colleges leadership on advising and mentoring
practices/activities Build committee of medical and health
professionals to be incorporated in the programming, mentoring, and
advising of the program
- Secure experiential learning (clinical, research, service,
global, etc.,) opportunities
Program Management:
- Supervise Pre-Med/Pre-Med/Pre-Health Advising Program
staff
- Oversee department administration/operations
- Development, implementation, and tracking of goals
- Represent the department at meetings internally and
externally
- Special projects as needed
Student Recruitment and Retention:
- Collaborate with college partners on recruiting
efforts
- Represent program during university recruiting
events
- Identify qualified matriculated Northeastern students and
recruit them (as appropriate) into the Pre-Med/Pre-Health advising
program
- Develop and execute strategies to increase the number of
students from underrepresented populations in the
Program
- Develop strategies to increase retention of high achieving
pre-med/pre-health students
- Develop and executive effective advising and mentoring
practices
- Create and distribute marketing materials to be used by EMSA
and colleges for recruiting prospective students
