About the Opportunity

The Learning Design, Training and Systems Support Specialist I (TS-1) is primarily public facing and reports to the Director of the Office of Academic and Research Safety (OARS). The TS-1 is responsible for supporting a culture of safety at Northeastern University through the development, maintenance and evaluation of quality training programs and website communications towards the goal of university research safety, compliance through effective communication, training, outreach and customer service.

Key roles include (a) support towards the management and oversight of the OARS risk management platform, which hosts OARS learning management system; (b) design, implementation and updating of a wide range of online and classroom safety training programs; (c) and partnering with internal or external subject matter and technical experts to coordinate and deliver training products (e.g. factsheets and posters), services and programs, as needed: (d) overseeing website and intranet updates, developing and maintaining website news content while ensuring consistent branding messaging.

The preferred candidate will have prior experience developing and delivering interactive safety training programs appropriate for adult learners. The TS-I works in close collaboration within multiple team settings that include OARS managers, faculty, and other stakeholders and content-experts to assure collaborative input and satisfaction with training program content and modalities. The TS-1 will be technologically savvy and an agile learner of new platforms, tools and applications so to provide members of the university community with guidance, training and support to manage their end-user responsibilities on the risk management platform.

The TS-1 will approach training strategically using needs analysis, be organized and skilled in project management, and will follow trends in dynamic, interactive training delivery. This individual values life-long learning, and is in possession of a high emotional intelligence that encourages meaningful engagement from and with adult learners participating in training programs.

Along with the above aspects of training development and management of learning management systems, this position provides professional support to academic and research safety programs maintained by the OARS office to enhance teaching and research activities across the University. This position requires the ability to conduct research to identify, create or procure appropriate training materials and approaches for novel or emerging research and academic safety hazards.

The TS-1 may develop operational guidelines and support the collection, visual presentation and design of program metrics for quarterly and annual reports. The employee will oversee the activities of a co-op and a work study student, engage with contract vendors, and assist with other OARS needs as requested.

Responsibilities:

Information Technology Support
  • Manages department risk management platform and reviews available technology options and solutions.
  • Develops and implements solutions in the areas of integrated database administration, collaboration software, website analytics, technical support, user training, and on-going maintenance.
  • Assists program managers to fully utilize the features of office platform and technology assets.


Training Development and Delivery
  • Assists other research safety program managers and specialists to deliver on-line and classroom-based safety awareness and compliance programs.
  • Employs digital resources to deliver state-of-the-art safety programs to meet the needs of the ‘next generation' learning environment.
  • Researches, analyzes, and evaluates the application of new materials, techniques, procedure and equipment.
  • Ensures effective delivery of training online or in-person.
  • Develops and applies new approaches to effective training and communication of safety, health and environmental topics to students, staff and faculty through learning design.
  • Work with the Provost's Office and academic departments in integrating safety learning and knowledge into the academic curricula.


Recordkeeping
  • Oversees training platform management record retention compliance for OARS training records including delinquencies.
  • Coordinates and supports the import and management of data into various databases and platforms, as needed.
  • Trains staff and university community on various end-user databases and related software products. Prepare operational manuals for end-users and technical documentation for database design.


Website and Intranet
  • Assists OARS team with development of information and media for website news feed, annual reports for enhanced and more effective communication with our clients.
  • Lead OARS team in updating website and intranet (SharePoint) to ensure consistent branding and messaging.


Collateral Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provides general support to other academic and research safety programs.
  • Researches, analyzes, and evaluates the application of new materials, techniques, procedures, equipment, and instrumentation used in the teaching and research programs.
  • Other duties as assigned by OARS directors.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required in education, educational technology, instructional design, computer science, communications, digital strategy or other applicable degree required.

  • Minimum of 2years' experience managing learning management systems and supporting the maintenance of administrative platforms and databases.

  • Creative ability, writing proficiency, visual graphics design ability.

  • Proficient at standard software packages including Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint, and Outlook);

  • Experience with the oversight of a Learning Management System (LMS) such as BlackBoard, Canvas, or other customized learning management systems.

  • Excellent customer service skills; cordial and helpful communication style.

  • Ability to communicate clearly with platform and software vendors and University ITS to trouble-shoot customer queries.

  • Excellent time and project management skills, including planning, prioritizing, and scheduling multiple ongoing projects.

  • Quick learner of design tools and software packages. Experience with instructional design software Articulate360 or similar);

  • Ability to clearly and concisely express ideas orally and in writing; ability to compile and present instructions, ability to understand and interpret complex written regulations.

    Desired Qualifications:

  • Minimum 2-years of experience presenting and facilitating multiple interactive training programs

  • Knowledge of environmental health and occupational safety principles and regulatory frameworks.

  • Training certification (e.g. Certified Environmental Health and Safety Trainer (CET) or equivalent professional experience.
